Hog Feeding .... Again

The ruling class in DC is feeding again, in a particularly invidious and hypocritical manner. After posturing for the public by attacking corporate CEOs using private jets, they slip a purchase of eight more for themselves to be pampered around the world.

WSJ: "WASHINGTON -- Congress plans to spend $550 million to buy eight jets, a substantial upgrade to the fleet used by federal officials at a time when lawmakers have criticized the use of corporate jets by companies receiving taxpayer funds. The purchases will help accommodate growing travel demand by congressional officials. The planes augment a fleet of about two dozen passenger jets maintained by the Air Force for lawmakers, administration officials and military chiefs to fly on government trips in the U.S. and abroad. The congressional shopping list goes beyond what the Air Force had initially requested as part of its annual appropriations. The Pentagon sought to buy one Gulfstream V and one business-class equivalent of a Boeing 737 to replace aging planes." "

Wonderful. Don't the antics of these hogs make you sick ? or angry ? Is there any more sleazy, disreputable, unethical passel on Earth ? Well, maybe ... in that gangocracy, Russia.

The Republic is never safe while Congress is in session.

Actions

None. I await a screaming buy or an idea on which sector or stocks will lead this bull market back to S&P 1200.

Word of the Day

"Minatory" - adjective [$10] from the novel, "Elmer Gantry" by Sinclair Lewis.
Minatory means threatening, menacing.
Sentence: North Korea relies on minatory stances and actions to generate foreign aid in the manner of an extortionist. I wonder if Obama will pay up.

Le Mot du Jour

"Exiger" - verb, transitive, regular -er conjugation like manger
Exiger means to demand, to require, to call for.
La Phrase: Exigeons des réformes dans le Congrès.
Sentence: Let's demand some reforms in Congress.

[sheesh, I just fixed a stupid error (noon ET)]

the SEC fines should come out of the executive bonus pool ......hank greenberg made billions thru stock options...........he was obssessed with the stock price........which led to accounting gimmickry at least...........probably outright fraud

  4. in 'regular' crimes..........the government seizes all monies and property that can be linked to the crime

why doesn't the government do that with the billions these ceo's looted thru accounting fraud ??

i know the greenberg vs SEC is a civil matter..........but if he was convicted in a criminal court.....could they seize the billions he cashed out ??

  5. the problem i have with you Bman is that you want the regulators and government to police management

i want the shareholders to do it.......unfortunately that is the job of the board.....and we all know the overwhelming majority of board members are 'friends' of management

i am still hoping the crash of 2008 will make shareholders more active......after all they are the owners..........management is stealing from them

  9. I'd like the shareholders to do it, too. But they need the rules changed to give them the power to do it. With today's nomination rules, open voting vs. secret ballot, and rules against forming groups to push for change, the shareholders have no hope to force change.

  10. yes, I think in a criminal case teh government ahve a lot more power to seize assets.

  17. Stock futures have ripped higher in the wake of the July Nonfarm Payrolls Report, which indicated that 247,000 jobs were lost lost month. Economists, on average, had expected 325,000 job losses. Meanwhile, job losses for June were downwardly revised to 443,000 from 467,000. With that, the unemployment rate now stands at 9.4%.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Hmmm ... perhaps frosty will be denied teh win in the peak unemployment guessing contest.

    Frsoty guessed 11.5%
    Bman guessed 8.%

    So far, Bman winning ...

    Frosty needs 9.75+% to win.

Spin & mfl are twisting in the wind ...

  24. Obviously I wish I had not sold the Obama 50. I had figured those could give me a 3x return into mid 2010. But my problems in Ohio and the risk of Obama not reappointing Ben shook me out.

    Now I'm just thinking ...

I'm a bit worn out taking lots of risks, so I want a clear idea, not just a shot in the dark.

I still like the Asian & South American & Indian consumer idea, but finding names might be tough. Advertising names in those areas might be a play, too.

I doubt if I put much effort into looking until after my canoe trip.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I might take a look at the industrial with goo dexport business ... if they aren't too expensive va. 2006 earnings.

btw I use 2006 earnings as a measure of "potential" gains. Current earnings mean nothing.

Bman have you ever seen the movie Deliverance ???

PS......i trust you plan on taking firearms with you on this trip

  27. btw, do we all now recognize that the bears in the Spring like Roubini, etc., saying things were going to get a lot worse, were totally wrong & unable to see the changes. Ditto Molotova ... JPM has doubled since she said reiterated a sell around 20.

being right once does not make one a God.

The Romans knew this ... as did the Greeks.

    Bears are the biggest worry.

nfw, holding it more than one day - like for a week or a month makes it a crap shoot.

Why not buy VNQ on real leverage ? Or options on it (fi they exist)

[VNQ owns real stocks, not derivatives.]

    ReplyDelete
  36. VNQ calls exist. IFF I wanted to play taht name with mucho leverage, I'd buy the December or some 2010 strike in the money a couple strikes. Plenty of leverage without the fraud.

Remember to measure risk buy the underlying share value.

    ReplyDelete
  45. my analogy was 1974.

    A severe recession. period.

It need not have gotten this bad, except for the beefer shorts manipulating to create a panic last fall.

    ReplyDelete
  46. venture capital probably is an asset class - a small one.

there is no other way to get a piece of new ideas at teh earliest stages.

One would have to be a fool to invest with Algore.

    ReplyDelete
  47. beefer longs creating panic is ok??..lol

    ReplyDelete
  48. btw, due to waves of new regulations, high taxes and eventual money printing to try prop up jobs (under a new Fed chief appointed by Carter), the 1974 severe recession was followed by seven years of serious stagflation and then another recession.

Will Obama cause a similar bad outcome ?

    ReplyDelete
  49. uh spin ... when the beefers create a panic long ... it's time to lighten up on the leaders - slowly.

because it won't take long for them all to hit the sell button at once.

    ReplyDelete
  50. was the end of the war a factor in the 74 recession?

    ReplyDelete
  51. the Vietnam war was ending slowly after 1971 - that's why I wasn't drafted when elibible in late 1972.

The recession was mostly due the Arab oil embargo during the Yom Kippur war and huge dislocations that caused worldwide as energy prices rose a lot ... permanently.

plus other harvest, commodity problems worldwide that all seemed to happen around the same times.

Then all the new government programs and rules - OSHA, environment, on and on.

I don't think the end of the war caused it at all.

    ReplyDelete
  52. DRN makes the 8% VNQ div in 2.5 hours....long term inwestor indeed...
