Soccer vs. Football

The WSJ online today had an article that will give plenty of ammo to fans of soccer over football, that is, American football.

WSJ: "According to a Wall Street Journal study of four recent broadcasts, and similar estimates by researchers, the average amount of time the ball is in play on the field during an NFL game is about 11 minutes. In other words, if you tally up everything that happens between the time the ball is snapped and the play is whistled dead by the officials, there's barely enough time to prepare a hard-boiled egg. In fact, the average telecast devotes 56% more time to showing replays."

A three hour telecast of football - 180 minutes - provides 11 minutes of real action. That's a remarkable number; of all the time one watches, only 6% is truly productive. That is so pathetic. Ridiculous. Compare that to soccer. The "action" in soccer is nearly continuous while the clock is running. No huddles, no time-outs. Almost 90 minutes of real "action".

Alas, that's the problem with soccer. The "action" is .... almost non-existent. Rules make it very difficult to score; defense is paramount. Too many games are decided by penalty kicks.

A pox on both their houses.

Rugby is far, far superior to both: Non-stop real action, running plays, tackling, passing, kicking, no blocking, no pads. Watching a top quality game in London last Spring, I saw a drop kick goal made. In rugby, a skilled back seeing he's about to be tackled can kick the ball downfield, then run quickly to catch his own kick and keep on going. It's a very exciting game and fun to play, too.

There are clubs and leagues for rugby in the US in most major cities. Find out the schedule and go watch the game. Or find rugby games on the international channels on your cable or satellite TV. It sure beats sitting on one's butt watching all that non-action on TV in either soccer or football.

Markets

The grind goes on. Intel numbers were good. Today is option expiration day. Soon I expect another pop up. Krypto Fund has plenty of long exposure. I don't see much to speculate on the long side. The only postion of 1-2-3 Fund is VVUS, which is a long term play on some promising drugs. Fido Fund has RIG, DVN, COF, CLF and CCJ. A few of those are approaching levels that I might consider sales.

Word of the Day

"Disingenuous" - adjective [$10] an old one from the file
Disingenuous means lacking in candor.
Sentence: These arguments against the new tax on bank liabilities by pundits and politicians in the pocket of the the big banks are disingenuous beyond belief. Consumers will pay ? Haha, 15 basis points is not even noticeable compared to the huge rates gouged from them on credit card loans. And those probably are off-balance sheet anyway, so not subject to the tax. Banks are recovering and it's not the time to tax them. Haha, they are paying huge bonuses to their internal speculators while not making loans to small business. This tax will be born primarily by trading house banks who leverage up with hedge fund loans and their own "bets" - that is, the reason the Street got into trouble in the first place. In my opinion, it's rather well-crafted.

  1. Bman...are you a fan of the AR-15 or do you go old school AK-47?

    ReplyDelete
  2. The AR-15. They fixed its bugs decades ago (which were mostly powder caused).

I've fired AK-47's - many are pos from stamped metal. Can't hit anything at distance.

But I'm not in a jungle or swamp ...

The HK versions of .223 rifles are better, but I think not available semi-auto (nor full auto except at very high prices)

    ReplyDelete
  3. the nice thing about AR-15 is the availability of spare upper receivers. So one can have several rifles at much less cost.

Can put on neat scopes, too, like those holographic ones - they work great.

  4. I think a 1:8 twist is about best for barrel - it can fire all ammo.

  6. Bunkerman you are a very smart man...but your "analysis" of soccer is purely absurd and shows a bit of naivety ($10)...

  7. I would assume the 5.56 NATO would be better than the .223 remington correct?
Not for match but for target and hd.

    ReplyDelete
  8. "best barrel" - don't know.

I just buy my spare uppers from Bushmaster; and the match AR is from Armalite.

    have not studied them.

5.56 NATO is the same as .223 for most practical purposes and can be fired in either; except that the 62 grain NATO round might have a steel core (green tip) and require the higher twist rate.

I have has some trouble firing SOME 5.56 NATO (not all) in my full auto AR - I've read the chambers are just a smidge different - and it causes some blow primers in the NATO ammo.

I've fired much NATO in semi auto AR 15 with now problem.

  9. ohh it's a subjective matter re soccer.

Some people get excited by watching grass grow, others don't.

    ;))))

  10. I think for HD, the NATO green tip would penetrate too much ... might go through tha walls & hit someone outside.

The other NATO would be OK.

    I forget the M #s.

Actually, the .223 would penetrate a whole lot too ... be careful

  28. I was young, not sure when; maybe age 8 - Dad took brothers & me out to a farm to shoot .22's.

Didn't do much until 1989 until "they" tried to ban assault weapongs.

I figured it "They" didn't want me to own them, I'd better get some

I liked the sport-hobby, got very deep into all parts of it for about 15 years.

I still have a fine collection, but am less active, except full auto.

  29. oh frosty ... absenttee here means going to town clerk at town hall & voting.

Technically it's an absentee ballot since it's not cast on election day.

  34. lol Spin ... I do a bit of Spanish once a week.

Of course, I have no illegals working here, so no need to speak in their language.

Bman is no cheapskate ... I pay a good price for my landscaping to a local pro.

  35. I don't exploit the common man or the poor.

    Ditto re plowing ...

    ReplyDelete
  36. also, I've noticed that Spanish is very close to Italian, so it will be very easy once I've learned Italian.

Working both at once is confusing, too.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Where I come from the common man cuts his own grass and shovels his own snow...but thats just me...

    ReplyDelete
  38. true, I indulge myself on the grass. The landscaper plants lots of flowers, too (to hide the mines, puts, etc.)

BUT the driveway is 1/4 mile long - tough to "shovel", or even use a snowblower.

I shovel the walk myself, though.
