Fact Tuesday

Hehe, good pun, no ?

So after yesterday's erudite post of scholarly thoughts [ ;-) ], today reverts to the markets. Since Babblevision and so much of the financial press provides an incessant stream of unsupported opinion [ aka fearmongering, etc. ], I want to give you a diegesis* of facts from the news of this weekend and today.

1. Copper breaks up out of a consolidation pattern to $3.67
2. Three major steel makers agree to 65% price increases for iron ore.
3. Oil back to $97.

So do those facts evince** recession for the economy? No.

Soon, the reality of the growing world economy will provide sepulture*** to all the fearmongering and recession-mongering those beefer bears.

Be patient. Buy good stocks on dips.

PS: Europe was up bigtime on Monday; Asia was up last night. US futures are up.

PPS: The problems in the aution rate municiple market means big refinancing business for the muni bond underwriters, viz, many big banks.

Words of the Day
*Diegesis - noun [$1000]; also "diegetic" adj.
"Diegesis" means 1. narration, narrative; in a speech, the statement of the case; 2. a narrative; a statement of the case.
Sentence: see * above.

**Evince - verb, transitive [$10]
"Evince" means 1. indicate, to make evident; 2. show that one has (a quality)
Sentence: see ** above; or "Hillary's campaign evinces collapse." This fine word permits one to succinctly make that statement, versus an the Gen Y version: "Hillary;'s campaign looks like it's going to collapse." One word, "evince" replaces "looks like its going to".

***Sepulture - noun [$10] (literary) [rhymes with "sepulcher" - accent on 1st syllable]
"Sepulture" means the act or an instance of burying or putting in the grave.
Sentence: see *** above; or "Will the voters of Ohio and Texas give sepulture to Hillary's campaign."

  1. agree it wud be a blessing or just nice to have a little one. i am not mad about that. just wish the worden wud let me in on what she is doing when it pertains to birth control.

i guess that is gud news for RIO, the iron ore thing. after reading your posts on RIO, i dug a bit and decided iron ore prices were going straight up. i have a whopping 100 shares. LOL

seems from your post inflation does not appear to be rolling over. so the rate cuts appear to be helping the beefers and some avg people caught up in the housing mess.

maybe ron paul is right. just get rid of the IRS (definitely agree there) and the FED (probably not the best idea, but maybe tweak it. actually i still think the big rub is the BLS. i dont believe one data from the BLS.

word of the yr in 2007 was "subprime". 2008 it will be "change". obama is clever, all he has to do is keep saying change and i voted against iraq. he hasnt been in dc long enuff to sell himself out to the devil 64 times.

its gonna be real interesting to see how the left tix plays out. will hildog stick to her thesis in 2000 that the popular vote is what shud count? judging from the way she pounding the superdelegates......well u figure the rest out.

bush wants free and democratic elections in cuba? do we have em here in the USA? i dont trust the machines. had a long talk about this with a college buddy yesterday

  8. I have noticed over the past year that the old short interest contraian relationship doesn't seem to work well any more. It's almost like market goes down as short interst goes up and vice versa.

    So am thinking about that.

Also with derivative problmes, maybe short hedging is less.

    Don't know.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I guess that might confirm that the beefers can make market go anyway they wish. If they short a lot it goes down.

If they cover it goes up.

    Dancing to their tune.

  10. omg, look at gasoline up a dime.

at the pump we r looking at new highs in about 2 weeks or less.

how do u substitute gasoline, milk, beef, health care, education?

get a bike, become a vegan (how funny was it when rocket was asked if he was a vegan and he said he didnt know what that meant? ROFL!), marry a minority so your kids will get scholarships.

the fed is really cornered. they cant do much except defend the asset portion of the economy. they cant control inflation. they will jaw bone it, but actions speak louder than words.

when is congress gonna hold a 4 hour meeting with elmer to explain his actions after the tech bubble splat?

oh thats right, congrssmen and women understand the economy about as much as i understand nuclear physics. they r still trying to get the auto jobs back in michigan.

    BRILLIANT!

    ReplyDelete
  11. gasoline can be saved a lot by consolidating trips.

Milk - men dring beer, babies breast feed. ;-)

beef - eat pork, chicken, tofu (ugh!), fish, etc.

health care - tough one, as it's so government controlled.

education - public school + home school as auxiliary; college is tougher.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Bunkerman..I find breast feeding after a few frosty malted beverages puts a smile on my face....sage advise indeed sir.

  13. LOL frosty. u r one sick pup!

bman fish prices through the roof. grouper, salmon, tuna, all my faves through the roof.

    chix through the roof

turkey still holding firm. but i have substituted buying deli turkey for buying a whole bird and cooking it off twice a month.

89 cents a lb versus 7 bucks a pound for deli breast. probably works out to 3 bucks a lb for the white meat.

i eat fish, chix, and turkey. i had a cheeseburger during the super bowl. i stopped eating lamb over 10 yrs ago. i stopped eating pigs about 3 yrs ago, except for the occasional rib.

    ReplyDelete
  14. what planet is this chix from

she sees oil maybe hitting near 100, and then settling down at 80.

at 50 she was probably expecting 35.

    hello its is already 98

    ReplyDelete
  15. I buy the whole chicken/turkey and roast, too. Very cheap if you don't pay a guy to de-bone it, etc.

    I know how to use a knife ! ;-)))

    ReplyDelete
  16. as I posted once before, most food is very cheap if one is willing to prepare & cook it.

"Inflation" comes from wanting to pay a guy/gal to do that for one. That's not inflation, it's a quality improvement.

    ReplyDelete
  17. plus u can buy steroid free birds. they cost a bit more, but taste so much better!

i cooked many summers in avalon nj in hs and college.

  18. u need to remember many famalies have two working parents, and work well over 40 hours a week. that doesnt leave a lot of time to cook properly.

everyday it gets harder to live the american dream.

becuase blue collar jobs r gone, most of us sit in front of a computer all day. come home burnt out. they dont feel like cooking or working out. if u dont work outside, imo, u shud be doing a hour of cardio 6 days a week. i wud make it seven, but my legs get tired, so i rest them 1 day a week

  19. that shooting was crazy. no motive, no note. i wonder what the dosage of his "legal" prozac was.

if he just stuck to weed, this wud have never happened.

as long as frosty eats and uses almost the whole animal, i dont see anything wrong with killing your own food. thats more humane than the beef that was recalled. that video footage was so nasty.

i just cant in gud conscious, eat meat, except when there is nothing else around.

  27. the reason the US lost 50k plus men in vietnam had nuthin to do with LBJ's strategy

it was cuz the US waged an illegal, immoral and unjust war against a poor peasant people who refused to surrender to an invading army

whenever the US wages an imperial and colonial war......it will lose and deserves to get beaten

that is what happened in Iraq.....it's immoral and unjust and the occupation is illegal

the overwhelming majority of americans are against the GOP's use of the armed forces for their imperial goals

  30. I read a book written perhaps in the 1970s by McCain's father who was Commander in Chief of the Pacific fleet in the 1960s.

He wrote quite a bit about LBJ ignored the vehement advice of himself and some others.

odd that Nixon actually did in 1972 what McCain Sr. wanted and Hanoi gave up quickly. Then the Dems on Congress gave the win away. I suppose the Dems will do it again in Iraq, Afghanstan.

    And McNamara ... = Rumsfeld.

    ReplyDelete
  31. it sure must bother the Oman that our 2 major foreign war victories were won by a democratic president (truman) and a dem congress

and our only 2 losses in history came under a republican president....nixon and bush

  54. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The teaching standards for Florida schools include the word "evolution" for the first time, under a decision Tuesday by the state school board.

The board approved the use of the term "scientific theory of evolution" in public schools science standards.

Previously, the term was couched by using phrases such as "change over time." The reaction in Tallahassee from those opposed and those for the change was fairly low key, Local 10 reported.

Adding the term "scientific theory" before the term "evolution" was a modified proposal at least one board member called a compromise, not standards proposed originally to the committee. The option to include "scientific theory" was made late last week. The amendment, which supporters refer to as the "academic freedom proposal," was unveiled late Friday.

Board member Roberto Martinez said that the revision had been made to "placate" people who disagreed with the standards.

Terry Kemple, the executive director of the Community Issues Council in Tampa, opposed adding the language "scientific theory" during public comments. In his group's opinion, he said, adding "scientific theory does not begin to even address the problems" with the standards, which were drafted over approximately the past year.

John Sullivan, executive director-treasurer of the Florida Baptist Convention, has been outspoken in his opposition of the proposal. Sullivan sent a letter to all members of the Board of Education on Feb. 17 on behalf of the Convention's State Board of Missions, which represents Florida Baptists.

He said the teaching of evolution in Florida's schools should include scientific criticisms of the controversial theory.

The state Board of Education agreed to adopt the new curriculum standards Tuesday by a narrow 4 to 3 vote.

  59. I don't have a strong opinion on copper. But I figure the world has strong/moderate growth & China & India need lots. Mines take yars tostart. So it hit 4, then pulled back to 3, and has based and bounced awhile. So maybe it breaks $4 again. When this recession-mongering dies out - hehe gets sepultured - copper goes to $5.

Any ST move can just be beefers, of course. Or China might be re-stocking - they do that every year or so & then draw down, then rebuild.

  69. Ok-I just got back from Las Vegas from the MAGIC apparel convention, where I got a special behind the scenes look at what's in the hopper for CROX. Now, those of you close readers know I have been and remain bullish on the name. After having a look see at new products from You by Crocs and the Ocean Minded line, along with what is new for the company in apparel, I feel really good about this name in to earnings today.
Why? Diversification, international exposure, price points and new brands. Moreover--their booth was jam-packed with buyers late into the evenings during the show. There is so much more to this brand than rubber clogs, as I have said before. This new higher end fashion line called You By Crocs, fills a much needed niche for the name, bringing the Croslite comfort technology with sleek hi -fashion footwear looks. The stuff looks amazing, and remarkably--non-Crocs at first glance, which some of you will find comforting. The styles are completely trend right, and the price points capping just under $300.00 are exactly the type of trading-up category the brand needs to diversify and round out its product offerings. (I bought three pairs of boots on the spot--that's my test)

Backpacks, 'Mammoth' shearling, molded rubber beach bags, men's athletic apparel, all these line extensions give more breadth and depth to the brand. There's STILL lot's of room for growth here kids. And, not to mention, my buddy Jeff Klinefelter said in his fab note that Sportscan sees YTD sales of Crocs increasing 103%. With approx 7M units/month flowing through now vs. 3M at end of FY 06 it would seem that the company is managing its flow of goods rather well. Trading around 12x I believe this name is compelling. We'll know more after the close.
