Tax Loss Selling

The markets are likely to be very heavy until the end of the year as tax loss selling will be substantial. I did some of that yesterday and have more to do. Why pay taxes on realized profits if one has unrealized losses to offset them, at least partially ? That is real money that can be saved. For me, I can see my January 15 estimated tax payment cut substantially, as based on current results, I've overpaid my taxes so far this year.

One can switch mutual funds to take losses, or sell one stock & buy a similar one, or just sell and regroup. I expect people all over the world are thinking about this.

I still have a lot of gains that I booked early this year to offset as much as possible.

Markets

Les Bourses mondiales sont plombées. In English, that is "The world markets are leaden."

Hmmm ... I wonder how to say, "doing nothing" in French ? That verb for "do" has a lot of idioms in French. Hehe, it has interesting idioms in American English, too.

Word of the Day

"Mere" - noun (in this usage) [$10] archaic, poetic [I am not using the common adjective, mere, here]
Mere (in this usage) means a lake or pond.
Sentence: Reminiscent of that famous headline as New York City sought Federal help in the major 1973-1975 US recession, which read "Ford to NY - Drop Dead", we have, or can at least infer, "Bush to Detroit - Go Jump in the Mere".

  1. ok bman a serious question.

u r the dark meat and take office in jan. now lets pretend hildog doesnt put her hand on the bible first and triple stamped it, no antsi quitsys, fu man chu. and u actually get in.

    A. did u just inherit a worse hand than FDR? if not, y. imo, this is worse becuase the industrial revolution is behind us. we have a joke of an educational system. entitlement programs are much worse now. and we have 2 stupid wars we are fighting.

    B. as the dark meat what wud be your first 5 objectives to straighten out the good ole USA?

on a side note, is bush the worst president ever?

  3. did someone say it was tough to play in the Big 12 yesterday? HMMMM ...does Iowa ST play Texas? NO! Do they play Oklahoma? NO! Do they play Texas Tech? NO! So how in the f@ck is it tough? Cramer speak indeed sir!

  6. another dog and pony show in front of congress today.............i can't wait for jan 20th when the dems control everything

i'm tired of their pissing and moaning and bitching........we'll see what solutions they have

  7. honestly im not that bearish becuase so much has been trashed.

its just funny to see the lemons in my office bitch about the dark meat everyday. predicting the end of capitalism once he takes office. i keep my mouth shut becuase i expect to be fired everyday, like today.

i cud point out that under bush bear stearns went from BSC to JPM to the govt. thats not socialism, i dont know what is!

barry is smart unlike mccain, palin or bush. he has a iq and graduated at the top of his class from 2 ivy league schools. he shud issue as many warnings as possible before he gets in, and set that bar low.

if i was him id show charts of what things looked like in jan of 2001 and where we are today. then say, this is not allow of dubya's fault. every american on leverage is partially to blame, but just look at what this administration did to the middle class. look at how it has treated the men and women protecting this great land. im sorry mister bush, but u r the andy reid of the political world. now step aside while i try to clean up your mess.

    B. will think about B. IClarify please: do you mean (i)what will / should HE do, or (ii) what would I do.
    C. No, but close. Andrew Johnson gave us 100 years of racial bigotry and strife. Lyndon Johnson got 50,000 young men killed in Vietnam. Bush is in the top - i. e., bottom - five, though.

  15. Barry will have a cheerleading press going for him ... as soon as he takes office, optimism will reign and the clouds will clear in the press. He won't have to do anything to get that tailwind.

Press recession-mongering and inflation-mongering contributed to this mess, or prevented the early cures from working. That and the beefers bear raids this summer.

  16. what shud he do?

bud face it. u r a self hating spear chucker. just like i am a self hating white person.

  17. btw, the final trigger for the "bomb" was the libertarian Republicans who at first voted the Paulson plan down. That immediately led to a panic.

I need to bash them again soon.

  19. He should call for a $1 trillion, two year stimulus plan to revitilize America, and start an optimistic "shining city on the hill" concept a la Reagan ( or TR ) where the common man gets a "square deal".

Regulate the hell out of beefers.

Keep cap gains & div tax cuts in place. Tax beefer pay as ordinary income.

    More later.

    ReplyDelete
  20. for some reason i dont think cap gains gonna be a big issue for yrs to come, imvho.

but keep it coming i like the stimulus idea, just needs to be pointed in the right directions.

wud u pull out of iraq and turn afghanistan into glass? i wud do that!

  21. 'tax beefer pay as ordinary income'

    we've debated this before......so i won't rehash

but Bman........where the market is right now....with pensions and 401k's absolutely devastated

is this the right time to tax beefers ? .....i mean won't that discourage money coming into the market

we need to encourage investors into stocks right now........the 'common man' has his retirements in those pensions and 401ks

No tax change for the investors.

  27. re ppt, I thought taht was a joke among traders. Look, I've SEEN black helicopters and even I don't believe in a real PPT.

    Sheesh.

    ReplyDelete
  28. stimulus would go to roads, bridges, ports, rail improvements, high speed rail, high speed fiber optic Internet nationwide, buying foreclosed homes for lower income people and giving them rent-to buy contracts, re-training for "redundant" derivative traders and beefer amnagement [ ;) ] etc.

  39. reparations

    come on!

bud is more of a porch monkey than the president elect, and he doesnt believe in reparations.

looks like hildog getting vetted more intensely than palin for head of state.............

mccain picking palin was almost as stupid as donnys comments, almost.

"man can u imagine if the super bowl ended in a tie?"

now he is a spear chucker, but they go 80 feet over the target or straight into the dirt.

i think the mike in donnys helmet hurts him. u listen to him barking audibles.

"43 tight, 43 tight, check, check, all u can eat buffet, in the locker room, on 2........... shit........timeout"
"andy i dont remember buffet play"

andy "oops i thought i was ordering food for after the game. im fucking hungry, i dont have time to think about this, just run the play u did on 3rd down, they will never see it coming! now give me a shot of ranch dressing!"
