News Needed

The markets are in the doldrums until news shows the way for a new trend. Even the beefers* are tired of stomping in the mud around the old water hole. Small, nimble mammals like us just wait in the trees to jump onto their backs when they eventually move out.

GDP and unemployment claims data come out this morning. Perhaps big news is not needed, just a seed crystal to start the process. Time will tell. Just waiting for now.

*Beefer = big, evil funds.

Inflation

A new data point: I received my homeowners' insurance bill today for the next policy year. Coverage is identical replacement cost with various add-ons such as earthquake coverage. Cost was down 8.5% from the prior year. Some inflation ! Of course, I don't live in a hurricane target zone.

Words of the Day

Today's words and long quote are from "Reflections on a Ravaged Century", page 9 of the fine book by the famous historian, Robert Conquest, about the events of the 20th century.

"Accidie" - noun [$10]
Accidie means 1. laziness, sloth, apathy; 2. black despair

"Quotidian" - adjective [$10]
Quotidian means something occurring daily.

Sentences for both:
"Eric Hoffer** suggests that those who become possessed by exciting Ideas and identification with those causes are often 'selfish people who were forced by innate shortcomings or external circumstances to lose faith in their own selves.' It might be argued that, whether through temperament or accident, some who are simply bored with the quotidian turn to Ideas as stimuli. We are told of hostesses in Berlin in the early 1930s to whom National Socialism gave 'meaning to their empty lives.'
"Boredom is indeed a pitiable condition. And the feeling of meaninglessness, af accidie, can be devastating. Still, to compensate by abandoning reason for idealogy is a desperate remedy."

**From Wikipedia, "Eric Hoffer (July 25. 1902 (or 1898) – May 21, 1983) was an American social writer. He produced ten books and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in February 1983 by President of the United States Ronald Reagan. "

Hard to argue with his results, though, on the big items.

odd how liberals were such nit-pickers for Reagan, but under Clinton, everythig got a pass.

Ditto the Republicans, of course.

Ruling classes just want power.

Spin-em said...

somebody with a new putting grip is messed up.....get yourself a regular brass putter(brass is soft)same speed back ..same speed forward for long and short putts..think to yourself 1(back) 2(forward)(think...you want the ball to roll and be able to read the writing)..soft,soft grip you squeeze and that will pushh or pull....soft just adds force....20 foot putt?..pick a target 2 feet out and hit your mark.Theres 5 strokes....no charge..be the ball Danny..lol

Spin-em said...

one Sammy Adams HBO special and he's a Jeffersonian?

Bunkerman said...

uh ... Jefferson is really overrated as a President. He wrote of good Declaration of Independence and made the Louisiana purchase. That's about it.

His infatuation with the French Revolution was very dangerous and his gutting the military set US up for getting DC burned in War of 1812.

His embargo policy was idiotic.

Very overrated.

Quite sleazy, too, in his attacks on George Washington.

He even started the ideology of secession that eventually led to Civil War.

Bunkerman said...

ok Bud ... you are not a liberal.
...
I am not a conservative.

Bunkerman said...

Dear Sal,

Have you seen the general election polls lately? They consistently show that we'll beat John McCain in November. In a national head-to-head match and in the critical swing states, the numbers show I'm the best candidate to take back the White House for Democrats.

That is why it's critical that we stay in this race and keep fighting for every last vote. We can win the nomination if we extend our popular vote lead, and that means putting everything we have into the final races. With just a few days before the voters in Puerto Rico head to the polls, our campaign is working hard -- and your support is making the difference.

With your help, we're going to keep driving forward to victory, and there's no better time to help than right now. By making a matching contribution, you'll double your impact.

Match a contribution from a new donor today.

Thank you for putting your heart and spirit into this campaign. I couldn't do it without you.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

uh Bud...it is because of people like me that you can enjoy such things...elk in the early 1900's were nearly wiped out in the west...I belong to the rocky mountain elk foundation and this group and state funded programs through the sale of hunting lic and specific taxes on hunting equipment and ammo has restored herd levels to historic highs...the conservation effort is almost completely funded by hunters.

here's a great question from one of these hunter dirtbags

If you kill an elk at a water hole or wallow, will other elk use it again? Would it be a waste of time for someone to set up over the same spot the next day ?

another good one

Bull elk that are heavily pressured are often “call shy.” What additional tactics can be used to entice them within effective archery shooting range?

Celebrating 61,000 Acres of Conserved Habitat in Washington

MISSOULA, Mont.—An area of elk habitat larger than Seattle has been conserved and permanently opened for public recreation between Yakima and Wenatchee, Wash., and the public is invited to help celebrate at a June 7 ceremony near Ellensburg, Wash.“This area is right in the heart of migratory routes and spring and fall range for both the Yakima and Colockum elk herds,” said Rance Block of the Elk Foundation. “Thanks to Western Pacific Timber and DNR, along with many other conservation partners working together, we now have a significant and long-lasting conservation success to celebrate in Washington.”

uh yes, conservation.

Frosty said...

These are the questions we ask today, questions not unlike those that led hunters and anglers to establish game laws, fair-chase ethics and conservation goals in the early 1900s. At the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, we carry on that hunter-conservationist tradition. In fact, we’ve protected and enhanced five million acres of critical wildlife habitat since 1984.

But more must be done. Today, like every day, 2,500 acres of wildlife habitat will disappear — replaced by sprawl and concrete. That intense level of development, along with threats such as noxious weeds, makes now a critical time for the future of elk country.

2004 was 1500
2005 was 3200
2006 they wanted 8k, shopped around couldnt go better so i passed.

2007 got some for 6500 then they kicked me back 1500, 90 days later so it went to 5k

2008 back to 1850.

if i wud have been on a fixed income the last 4 yrs i would have lost my home, as many people did.

imo both reagan and clinton were ok, but they had many structual tail winds at thier back.
