A Typical Wednesday

That means nothing is happening. Sighhhh.

Spring is arriving here on time. Meteorological winter ended on Sunday and the daffodils are perking up, poking their heads up in places with southern exposure.

I'll still reading Empires of the Steppes: A History of Central Asia. The book has 500+ packed pages. I just started on the times of Genghis Khan. He's a fascinating figure and leader who made a remarkable comeback. Reading about how people lived then is a dividend: in the steppes and hunting and fishing in the forests north of the steppes. Their epic tales sound a whole lot like those of the American Indians, being laced with animal metaphors. Perhaps that's no accident, as the ancestors of the American Indians came from that area of Asia.

Obama is still playing Captain Ahab, seeking to take the whole Democratic party down in his lust for his Great White Whale, viz. ObamaCare.

Regulators are looking at beefer attacks on the Euro and at naked credit default swaps. Gosh, such diligence ! It's only 18 months after the Panic of 2008. Does anyone else notice the regulators seem to care only when their own financial status is at stake ? It's obvious they care nothing about the common man.

Markets

I put on the last slug of my put position. When fully in the money, that will make my 1-2-3 Fund 300% short effectively. That's enough, IF I'm right. This might not work ...

Word of the Day

"Longanimity" - noun [$100]
Longanimity means patience, forebearing, long suffering; patient endurance of hardship, injuries or offense; forebearance.
Sentence: (A) Genghis Khan's longanimty as a vassal of Wang-khan let him survive until his forces were strong enough to survive the final betrayal that Wang-khan perpetrated against him. (B) The common American man's longanimity as Racketeer Central continues to feed on his product must soon end in a taxpayer revolt.

bunk, what stock would you think best takes advantage of the rising price of cotton?

Mikey said...

Spin.....check out etf BAL for cotton

Bud said...

good morning Bman !!!!!!

Bman have you ever eaten at a PFChang's? went there last night for the first time in 5years..............spicy chicken.....good

Bud said...

Bman.............i'm confused

do you want credit default swaps outlawed??? that would be a disaster..............not only are the an integral part of risk management..............they also promote price discovery

mfl59 said...

"price discovery"

ummm do you even know what that means son?

Spin-em said...

xclnt.....attaboy Mike..thanks big guy....you tell those sons abitches..no Yankees are ever comin to Houston...loool

Bunkerman said...

none. Cotton is an input, a cost. It's price rise hurts clothign producers.

Shorting something that produces cotton goods at low margins would be the play.

Bunkerman said...

Re PFCHang, I think I have - it's good.

Bunkerman said...

bonds were sold in huge amounts for a century or more without credit default swaps. They are not necessary for "price discovery".

I think they "could" have a role IF regualted like an insuracne product.

Meaning no naked buying, and sellers must put up lots of cash collateral to fund the payment upon default.

That will eliminate the cascading default risk tha AIG brought to light.

They are just bucket shop bets now.

Bunkerman said...

banning them is OK with me.

Mikey said...

Spin...ROFL you bastard...lol

Spin-em said...

ROFLLLLLLL

Bunkerman said...

it's all these interlocking trades and instruments like CDS that caused the Panic to be systemic.

Bunkerman said...

that grade of cotton traded in the US is rather crappy, so it's used by T-shirt makers, underwear, eans, etc. Not quality cotton goods.

Bunkerman said...

the problem with the short, though, is one doesn't know if the firm hedged; if they did, might not miss earnings.

Bunkerman said...

sorry for long answer to short Q ... sighhhh

the world is complex.

Spin-em said...

thanks bunk

Bud said...

lemme try this again

Bman do you think the EU will survive the greek crisis?? do you think greece will leave the EU within 2 years

Bman do you think the Euro will be around 3 years from now ??

Bunkerman said...

yes, EU will survive as long as Germany & France want it to survive. Italy is important, too.

NO, Greece will not leave ... that's less confident, as if enough of its people are stupid, they might.

Yes re Euro - it will survive.

Look, the EU is a very, very weak confederation. Frankly it's no big deal if one or two small nations pull out, just as it's no big deal if one or two small natiosn don't join.

THe EU could even survive UK pulling out.

The EU is more about peace in Europe, and less about economics.

Spin-em said...

how many times does he have to give you that answer..How can you be so obtuse($7)??

Bunkerman said...

true, spin ...

I think obtuse is a legit $10 word. I looked it up once as its in my card file .. but maybe 35+ years ago.

Spin-em said...

I gave it $7 cuz thats the price of a movie ticket for Shawshank..Andy Dufrane used it lol

Bud said...

Bman how are you getting short ? e-minis or SPY puts ? or somethin else?

mfl59 said...

Bunkerman is the sharkfolio an asset class similar to CDS?

Bunkerman said...

Nope, mfl, it's a portfolio run by an ass.

Frosty said...

Sal's hero writing all year that 2010 nono 2009, but the tape sure not sharing that insight...not seeing much difference here...like last year overbought gave rise to the put call ratio, providing tinder to low volume rallies that carried higher resulting in performace chasing.

chinllee and momo back this week yet once again we are seeing the put call increase coming into the triplebitch...sound familiar, Sal's best two weeks ever...crap takes a big lead, spy protection crushed, chase is on..bang, new highs.

Bunkerman said...

No one's ever gonna keep me down again

CHORUS
Oh yes I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to, I can do anything
