Whew, doing taxes is mind-numbing ! And I still have to do our own taxes Ugh ! I need a day off. Maybe today ?
The Fed's TSLF auction went off OK - decent demand. I mentally call the TSLF the "Teasle-F", by the way, thinking that fat, fascist sheriff [ the "F", among others ;-) ] in the first Rambo movie, "First Blood". I suspect the Street and banks need a while to evaluate how to use the facility and its costs. I heard a lending fee 0.33% quoted. Hmmm what does this mean ? Here is a link to the New York Fed that describes the terms of the TSLF: http://www.newyorkfed.org/markets/tslf_terms.html
Let me educe [ ;-) see yesterday's blog for this $10 word ] the economics of this program from its terms. Note this program is a "loan" of securities - a hypothecation - like one does when shorting a stock.
Suppose I own some mortgage securities now yielding 6%. When I "lend" them, I still keep the interest on mine. Assume Treasuries I receive on the loan are yielding 2.5% which I must pay the Fed and that I must put up 110% market value as collateral. So I put up $110 million yielding 6%, receive $100 Treasuries yielding 2.5%, so therefore have $10 equity capital tied up in the transaction. In my bid, I agreed to pay the Fed an extra 0.33% on the loan of the Treasuries to me.
Inflows: $110 million at 6% = $6.6 million
Outflows: $100 million at (2.50% + 0.33%) = $2.83 million
Net Inflow: $3.77 million
Capital Used: $110 million - $100 million = $10 million
Annual ROE: 37.7%
Hmmm that's pretty good. This is a good program for the primary dealers.
This calculation also shows one the huge net interest income now being earned by the banks. They can borrow at 2.25 - 2.5% overnight or for 28 day tems in the TAFfy, or the TSLF now and receive around 6% on the assets they buy/own. The net interest spread of over 3.5% is simply huge. Suppose a bank has 10% capital (primary plus secondary). It's gross ROE is over 35% per annum now. The stocks are trading at book value or less. So that gross return is simply enormous.
You can see why I like my investment in the big banks. It was made on the basis of the Fed doing my bidding eventually and that management of the big four will weather the storm. Obviously there were and are risks. And I screwed up the entry, violating my time diversification principles a bit in the fall. But I like the long term prospects. When the write-offs and losses stabilize, that 37% gross ROE will reap huge returns, in my humble opinion, for owning these stocks at book value. I had better stop or I'll talk myself into buying more ... I have plenty already.

3 "handy steps" for getting a questionable loan approved by JPM Chase's automatic system:
1. Lump all of an applicant's compensation as the applicant's base income, rather than breaking out commissions, bonuses and tips.
2. Do not disclose use of gifts for down payments.
3. If all else fails, simply inflate the applicant's income. "Inch it up $500 to see if you can get the findings you want. Do the same for assets.
Thus reads an internal memo from Chase obtained that accidentally found its way into the hands of journalist Jeff Manning of The Oregonian. It was the basis for an article titled, Chase mortgage memo pushes 'Cheats & Tricks'.
lolol but item #2 is a long standing practice of every home buyer for decades.
pce m/m core inflation 0.1% a good number.
core PCE y/y is 2% this month adn revied to 2% last month ... that's on upper endline of the "comfort zone"
so the 'flation part of stagflation goes to the dustbin of wrong ideas ;-)
what's wrong with #1 if consistent over a couple years and an important factor in a person's income ?
They did that when I got my first mortgage in 1984.
no need to be unduly harsh in new underwriting.
item #3 is fraud.
Yes I'm not sure what's wrong with #1 or #2....

Dear Sal,
It is a bedrock American principle: we are all equal in the voting booth. No matter where you were born or how much money you were born into, no matter the color of your skin or where you worship, your vote deserves to count.
But millions of people in Florida and Michigan who went to the polls aren't being heard. The delegates they elected won't be seated at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August -- and that's just not fair to those voters.
The people of Michigan and Florida must have a voice in selecting our nominee for president. I have repeatedly called for seating their delegates.
Click here to join me in showing our support for seating Florida and Michigan delegates at the convention.
This is such an important principle, and I appreciate you standing up with me.
Sincerely,
Hillary Rodham Clinton
fantasy baseball indeed...oh brother.
Dear Sal,
Have you noticed the pattern?
Every time our campaign demonstrates its strength and resilience, people start to suggest we should end our pursuit of the Democratic nomination.
Those anxious to force us to the sidelines aren't doing it because they think we're going to lose the upcoming primaries. The fact is, they're reading the same polls we are, and they know we are in a position to win.
In three days, we're facing a critical March filing deadline -- another chance to show the strength of our campaign. Let's take these three days to make something absolutely clear: we aren't going to simply step aside. You and I are going to keep fighting for what we believe in, and together, we're going to win.
Contribute today to help us raise $3 million by the March filing deadline at midnight Monday.
At times like this, with everything on the line, it means so much to me to know that I can rely on you to meet the challenges we face head-on.
Thank you for everything,
Hillary Rodham Clinton
"28 bux and wrong way beefer" lmaoooooooooooooooooo
phenomenal effort indeed sir
Earlier this week, Democratic Rep. Tim Mahoney of Florida suggested Gore, the party’s 2000 presidential nominee, could assume the role of a compromise candidate if neither Hillary Clinton nor Barack Obama could broker a deal.
"If it goes into the convention, don’t be surprised if someone different is at the top of the ticket,” he told a Florida newspaper, adding Gore could be that choice.

the record books show that one of the wildest ballgames in all of baseball history ocurred 27 years today — May 17, 1979
In a game started by Randy Lerch and Dennis Lamp, where neither of them lasted beyond a 1/3 of an inning, 11 home runs; 5 for the Phils, 6 for the Cubs went sailing out of wind-blown Wrigley Field. The box score lists Dave Kingman’s 3 home runs, Mike Schmidt’s 2, including the 10th inning game winner shows that even starter Randy Lerch got into the act amidst the 7 run outburst by the Phils in the 1st inning off over Lamp and Donnie Moore.
But, in the Cubs half of the 1st, they struck back for 6 including ‘King Kong’ Kingman’s first of his 3 homers, a 3 shot, as Lerch and Doug Bird were touched up.
Things quieted down temporarily as both teams registered goose-eggs in the 2nd inning. But in the 3rd, there was a second huge Phillies uprising as they scored 8 runs while the Cubs were retired in their 3rd without scoring; 15-6 Phils.
The 4th inning had the Phils scoring twice, the Cubs 3 times; 17-9 Phillies. The Phils scored 4 in the 5th and the Cubs followed with 7 in their half of the 5th, including Bill Buckner’s Grand Slam off of Tug Mcgraw as ‘the Tugger’ was tagged for all 7 Cubs runs and lasted but 2/3 of the 5th inning; 21-16 Phils.
The Cubs followed with 3 spots in the 6th and the 8th while the Phils managed another run in the 7th; game tied at 22.
Both sides rgistered goose-eggs in the 9th and the game went to the 10th with Cubs closer Bruce Sutter having shut Phils down in the 9th and Rawly Eastwick doing likewise to the Cubs in their half of the 9th.
With 2 out in the 10th, Mike Schmidt ended the scoring with his 2nd home run of the game, a solo shot off of Sutter. Eastwick retired the Cubs in order in his 2nd shut out inning and was credited with the win.
The two teams combined for 45 runs on 50 hits in a game where 21 different players scored runs and the 2-team total of 47 extra bases on long hits (24-Phi) set a ML mark for an extra inning game.
The game was the largest scoring game in the majors since August 25, 1922, when these same two teams met and duked out a 26-23 run-fest.
schmiddy vs kingman "those were the days"
this is EOQ short window dressing courtesy of no uptick rule ... just push 'em down to bump that management fee for the quarter.
Have a good weekend ... going to feed the birds & squirrels
This is definitely a double martini party tonight.
I fully expect that the bias over the next two days will be higher as investors try their best to salvage something out of a dismal period. In the absence of more negative news over the weekend, I would not be surprised if equities rise by 1% to 3% over the course of Friday's and Monday's sessions.

I was wrong way kass myself today, think he brought them in faster than I did...cramer calling the bears shot into the bell.

Police say a missing Orleans County, N.Y., pastor has been found — physically fine but emotionally distraught — at a strip club outside Dayton, Ohio, The Buffalo News reports.
Shortly after 1 a.m. Friday, police reported they had located the Rev. Craig Rhodenizer's vehicle outside a club in Riverside, Ohio. They were suspicious when they spotted an out-of-state license plate in a relatively high-crime area.
Police ran the plate number and learned that Rhodenizer had been reported missing by his family early Thursday. Officers soon found Rhodenizer inside the strip club, The Buffalo News reports.
"When they had contact with him, he appeared to be very distraught and very emotional," Lewiston Sgt. Frank Previte told The Buffalo News. "He told the officers that he did not know how he got there or where he was."
Rhodenizer was taken to a Dayton hospital for further evaluation. The 46-year-old is the pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lyndonville, N.Y. Family members last heard from him Wednesday afternoon, when he told his wife he was heading to a store in Amherst, The Buffalo News reports.
