State of the Union

I didn't watch last night's propaganda show. These speeches have become a combination of a pep rally and baloney session. I think they are a waste of time as one can read the main points in about ten seconds in the morning's newspapers. I remember reading some of Lincoln's State of the Union speeches. They were very short and to the point. He also spent a bit of time on actual federal budget numbers - amazing, a real number in a speech !

The Florida Republican primary is today; polls say that Romney is tied with Mccain. At least two honest men are leading. With the economic problems in Florida and their housing problems, this might provide some insight into voters' thinking.

Market-wise, I await the Fed's decision tomorrow. I want 50 bps ! Is that clear enough ?

Bank stocks acted better yesterday. Some bullish patterns were formed in a few. BAC broke up and out of a bullish pennant; WB is trying same as is C and JPM. DVN was very strong. GOOG was weak ahead of earnings this week.

I sold a bit of gold yesterday in the Krypto Fund and will put the funds into stocks. I need to sell almost 1/3 of my large gold holdings as that group is very overweight. I'm keeping silver until it hits at least 1$18/oz. I'll let some gold go every few weeks as long as it's over $900/oz.

MMM beats Q4 EPS, revs; reaffirms guidance for FY08. Where is the recession ?

mern said...

ok i need some more edumacation on life insurance, thoughts appreciated!

bman seriously i cant believe u think like that on the economy, ie DOW.

do u remember in late 2000 right before we entered into a recession (but the bls never acknowledged the recession until we were out of it, so technically during that recession the BLS never actually said "right now, right at this very moment, the economy is contracting". it was all backward revivisions. which again suggests the BLS shud be named bureau of lying stats.)

any way the CEO of JDSU was on, the stock was going down 10 pts a day. the ceo was asked do u see business slowing down? he said no, not at all.

samething with the CEO of LEN early last yr.

70% of americans think we r in a recession per usa today.

70% of the country lives pay check to pay check.

the herd is usually right except at the extremes, like 90%.

if the fed does not do 50, then they wasted all these bullets. they better do 50.

r the s&p earnings really up yoy even with the "one time charges" from the fins? how about if u back out the gains from the $'s poundings? r earnings really up?

if i was a registered inde i wud be going for mccain today. rudy is done. i dont know much about mitt, other than a mormon. y do i need to know more than that? if he believes in the book of john, he is retarded.

VLO huge beat Q4 EPS and revs.

Bunkerman said...

I think if the economy was contracting, the numbers for late Q4 would affect the ability of these huge companies to perform OK.

So any downturn had to have begun in January. Maybe they did. But the numbers show nothing yet.

So far we have a housing problem, a Wall Street mess and a rich man's panic. Thye think 2000 is repeating - very wrong, since the levels are completely reversed. High valuations then, low ones now. They learned the wrong lesson in 2000.

70% or more of Americans are either followers or have to be towed. What they "believe" is irrelevant. What they do matters.

Bunkerman said...

JDSU, etc were lying to prop up their stocks. All those stock option guys lied, like Ebbers, etc.

Lying now is much riskier. Also then they were selling stock like wild men; now they CEOs have stopped selling.

mern said...

rudy thinx he can win florida?

Bunkerman said...

sigh ... rail BNI beats Q4 eps, revs. This is getting overwhelming.

mern said...

i actually had a client who owned a contract manufacturing company and he made stuff for JDSU, etc.

he gave me 100k in 97. by 2000 it was like 1.2 mil. in oct of 2000 i told him to get off da butter and raise cash. every call, he said just buy more chief, no slowdown is coming. i see no slowdown. i was like u dont see what Q and WCOM r saying? they r cutting capex, "whatever chief, buy more JDSU and DIGL, etc". the acct went to 0 by june of 2001.

then he sent me more money to buy cramer picks from aa plus. i told him he was crazy again, and the relationship eventually blew up.

he clearly did not see it coming.

it really seems like the 70% that spends as much as they make and then some may finally be finished.

i will say, that even in crackerville, all the malls r packed, on week days. on weekends, forget it. tampa simply does not have the infrastructure to handle traffic. leaving your house on the weekend, unless very early or very late, is just a waste of time. and the housing blow up is worse here than just about anyway.

imo, most people r experiencing stagflation. and if the feds concern was helping these people, they wud let this recession happen and let everything deflate. but there is too much at stake for a recession with the boomers starting to retire. so we play the game, and hope psychology never totally unwinds.

maybe this bounce last until mayish, maybe we get back to 1500. but once the seasonality kicks in, and the mud slinging between the donkeys and elephants starts, a retest of the lows or lower shudnt be shocking

mern said...

Many people know that whole life insurance policies are usually more expensive than term life insurance policies, and for this reason most people choose to purchase the less expensive term life insurance policies. However, despite the higher premiums you may pay for whole life insurance policies, there are several advantages of whole life insurance.

1. Whole life insurance policies accumulate cash value. Unlike term life insurance policies, whole life insurance policies will accumulate a tax-deferred cash value. This means you do not have to pay taxes on the cash value that your whole life insurance policy accumulates. You can actually make money from your whole life insurance policy.
2. Your whole life insurance premium is usually fixed. Unlike term life insurance policies, whole life insurance policies usually offer a fixed annual premium. This means that the amount you pay will stay the same, regardless of whether or not your health begins to worsen. Most term life insurance companies will raise your premium if your health begins to deteriorate, costing you more money at a time you especially can not afford it.
3. Whole life insurance policies cover you for life. Term life insurance policies only cover you for a certain number of years, which is what some people need; however, with a whole life insurance policy, you will be covered for life. This means that you will not need to worry about renewing your life insurance policy.

Yes, whole life insurance policies tend to be more expensive, but the annual premiums can be fixed. And yes, whole life insurance policies cover you for life when you may think you only need coverage for a certain number of years, but that lifelong coverage offers worry-free protection. So, if you can afford the higher premiums, can take advantage of the tax-deferred accumulated cash value, and are interested in being insured for life, you should consider the advantages of whole life insurance policies.

this is bs, right?

Bunkerman said...

durable good ordes ex-trans OK - if the Fed cuts as I say, no recession will occur.

Bunkerman said...

yes, it's bs, mern. the "whole" part of whole life is just a low rate savings plan, with big commissions.

For all but teh rich, the tax deferral is worthless.

Stick to term. Renewal term is what I like as you can renew until you what to drop it.

Bunkerman said...

the fundamental problem with whole life is that it is impossible to buy enough to really give you the amount of insurance necessary, unless one is already rich.

It's mostly useful for tax reasons or estate planning.

mern said...

ya agree. but if i did that id starve at this firm. so i guess, i pass on the offer.

Paul Navone is one of those quiet millionaires next door. His friends had no idea he had money until he started giving it away -- $1 million to a college and another $1 million to a prep school. The 78-year-old retiree never made more than $11 an hour while working in the New Jersey mills, according to a story by Joe Logan in the Philadelphia Inquirer, and to this day Navone buys his clothing at thrift stores, and doesn't have a TV or a phone.

Navone, the son of Italian immigrants, quit school and went to work at age 16. He lived at home and saved. After two years in the Army, he bought the first of several rental properties. He lived off that income, saved his wages and turned to investing, the Inquirer story says. "Paul has always been the perfect client. He gave me money and never took it out," said broker R. Douglas Smithson, senior vice president for investments at Wachovia Securities in Vineland. "He took my advice, he stuck to a plan, and he reaped the benefits of it."

ya that wud be perfect, an alcoholic owning a bar. pfffffffft this isnt cheers in hollywood.

there is a conveince store/ gas station close. no competition close, that was foreclosed. ive thought about looking at it. it needs a makeover, my guess at least 50k for make over.

but it generates cash, and i can see how it blew up first off. i knew the owners. maybe they were just poor and cudnt pay the rent.

after owning the dog biz, i think i understand how it wud work.

u need 50 cameras, about 40 of which on the cash register. u hire lower class drug addicts. no advances. u live there (which i can do especially 2 minutes from home and my bong). that place shud generate well over 150k. dont see the stress as with dog shop, like dogs dying, etc.

r americans gonna stop using gas, eating poorly and drinking lots of beer and soda, plus buying lottery tixs?.

funny the fin business does not seem impressed with my resume witch is impressive and i have not 1 hickey on my u4. i literally get the impression my honesty is a bad trait.

i guess putting down the reason u resigned from your last job is becuase u were throwing up in the parking lot every am, knowing all the crimes u wud be looking at all day.

i ve got the contacts. i ve got the money. as i remember it, in college, the pay was great. just never sell to anyone u dont know, really well.

after u establish a solid base, then u move to the middle schools. u get some 9th graders to branch out for u and hammer the middle schools.

and then all u need is one contact at the nudist colonies, and next thing u got 5000 nudists for clients.

one downside, is jail and divorce.

sigh!

when the japaneese had this type of demographic (ie large generation starting to retire) the savings was so high it started deflation.

so instead of saving for retirement we doubled the amount of credit card debt.

well as long as the fed enables this behavior, the addicts will continue to use.

the hangover cud be lethal. remember alcohol is the only drug that the withdrawl can kill u. not even heroin is that bad on the backside.

Bunkerman said...

sheesh mern, you are such a bear.

Don't Worry ... Be Happy !

Debt is good in moderation. And the US debt need never be paid off - that would be bad actually. Alexander Hamilton knew the some national debt is good.

Ability to pay is measured in the income/debt service ratio and that's ok as long as people have jobs.

let dollar go down to its free market level.

Bunkerman said...

everyone should get credit lines & borrow money when they don't need them. I've done taht for years - I have over a dozen credit cards.

Some debt is good. Heck, whenever a lender gives me a cheap loan I take it even if I don't need the money.

The problem is ... stupid spending. That's the same for people and for the US government.

Bunkerman said...

the fed action is what matters, not the volume

mern said...

dude honestly, u have no idea. u rich and so most of contacts.

I KNOW FOR A FACT MOST PEOPLE UNDER 40 MAKING LESS THAN 200K A YR, R DROWING IN DEBT.

no ifs and butts, that is a fact.

if u have kids and make less than 200k, u cant make ends meet these days. its a combination of inflation and our society which is based on keeping up with the jones. the boomers did a poor job of teaching their kids how to manage debt.

i have a friend who makes 150k who just declared bk. becuase of college loans he never had a chance.

middle america digging a whole right next to hildog. they can dirt nap next to each other.

oh mern, you forget I go home to my small town every few months. I went to high school ther and still know lots of people. Even in that depressed economy, lots of people I know make a lot less than 100K, have or had kids and are doing fine. They just don't spent money like fools.

Bunkerman said...

They are delusional. When the parents hit the nursing home, that sucks up money like nothing else.

Lots of boomers have less than they think, too.

Early savings is soooo profitable and important. Under 40 or even under 30 not saving are really dumb.

I think my early savings up up 20x or so.

i got 125 bucks from cindys mom, dad, sister, and brother.

i bought the parents 100 beans for sushi.

all of them have jobs, and money.

wtf?

actually cindys parents turned out 3 fiscally conserative college grads. all fine examples of non white US citizens. maybe its just whitey that sux?

ball is neat. only 8 panels and bar coded for match play. the goals now have chips as well as the ball, so the refs cant screw up a goal anymore.

man im still appaulled by what happened to team USA in the world cup. there was clearly an agenda there. i never seen worse reffing in my life. and ive seen bad reffing.

rubber knives and k bars????...

Bunkerman said...

uh mern, could you survive the firt tackle & ruck, or would you be crushed & broken ?

Rubgy is 40 minutes nonstop total body action, not just running.

Scrum, ruck, tackles. Rugby is football plus wrestling plus soccer all rolled together.

Soccer does have cute boys playing, I've heard ;-)

Bunkerman said...

The rubber knives are for sparring. The edges are lined with lipstick & sparring is bare chested, so the "cuts" can be seen.

The Kbar training is for more "live" training, sort of the knife equivalent of bayonet training. One needs to get a feel for the thrusts into a body and how is pressured the wrist, etc. :-)

One needs to do similar training with a good pocket knife. I also use large sheets of cardboard taped taped together into thicker blocks of 3 or 4 sheets thick. One can practice slashes on those, too.
