An F Day

Hehe, that got your attention, no ?

In honor of my laughing my guts out on that Sarah Silverman video on YouTube and the follow up one by Kimmel, I decided to use "F" words for my Words of the Day below. [See later comments for yesterday's blog for the links.] This also proves I am not a "blue-nose" if that needed proving.

Hmmm ... I started with a facetious* paragraph ;-)

Markets
Solid day yesterday - perhaps the markets are getting comfortable with Battleship Ben, who signaled more rate cuts are coming. Good - he needs to keep shelling the bears with those 16" big ones. IBD said many stock leaders (as they pick them) had solid days. RBS raised its dividend on good earnings and prospects. Vik Pandit at C beefed up its risk management staff. Large private capital $$$ will be going into Ambac ... providing evidence the doomsayers were wrong in screeching it is a black hole. After weeks of due diligence, I think one must conclude private capital knows better than big mouth pundits and reporters. The same applied to BAC's purchase of CFC.

Certainly the bears will try again. But recent bear raid attempts ran into real buyers lower.

I'll sell some silver Friday if I can get over $18/oz. Otherwise, I'm doing nothing but waiting and thinking. Btw, my Alpha Fund is very long, almost 200% long.

PS: the municipal variable rate note story in the WSJ is another example of how very profitable business is flowing to the big banks. The spreads on these backup lines is superb.

Words of the Day - "F" words
"Facetious" - adjective [old $10 - hmm my handwriting was a lot more readable 35 years ago]
"Facetious" means playfully jocular; humorous.
Sentence: see * above.

"Facile" - adjective [$10]
"Facile" means 1. specious, superficial; 2. mild or pleasing in manner or disposition.
Sentence: Is Obama just another facile politician or does he have real ideas ?

"Fatuity" - noun [$10]; and "Fatuous" - adjective [$10]
"Fatuity means 1. stupidty, folly; 2. a fatuous remark, act or sentiment.
"Fatuous" means complacently or stupidly foolish.
Sentence A: The colossal fatuity of LBJ's strategy for the Vietnam War cost the lives of 58,000 good American soldiers.
Sentence B: Georgy W. Bush and Rumsfeld imposed a fatuous postwar policy in Iraq that has led to wasted time and lives in fighting terrorism.

"Fecundity" - noun [$10] and "Fecund" - adjective [$10]
"Fecundity" means prolific, fertile.
"Fecund" means 1. fruitfuil in offspring or vegetation: profilic; 2. intellectually productive or inventive to a marked degree.
Sentence A: The blog of Bunkerman contains unusual fecundity of original thought. ;-)
Sentence B: The blog, "View from the Bunker", shows a profoundly fecund mind in its author. ;-))

Hmmm ... "Fecundate" is a transitive verb meaning to impregnate ;-)

GOOG must be near a bottom....I believe I see 3 different analysts cutting their price targets this morning....

"facetious"? hmmmm....and my suggestions such as sycophant, toadie, and chalatan get rejected...I'd like to lodge a complaint please sir....Is there a committee?

mfl59 said...

that should read "charlatan"....

Bunkerman said...

sycophant is a $10 word.

charlatan should be one, but for some reason, I mus thave learned its meaning before I started my card file 35+ years ago.

toadie ... that's a good one .. spelled "toady" btw in my dictionary but both are fine.

toady [noun] means an obsequious flatterer: sycophant. As a verb, means to be a toady or behave as a toady.

Bunkerman said...

If one "ever" has to look up a word to get a better sense of the meaning, even if one "sort of" knows it, that qualifies as a $10 word. Hence "facetious" today. I heard it on a DVD spoken by an Englishman last evening and thought I'd check the exact meaning.

Bunkerman said...

It's possible the fourth glass of wine caused "facetious" to be promoted ;-)

mfl, saw the PDI guys going off on the 9 yr old for grunting, while playing tennis.

umm, ive been playing tennis for about 30 yrs. and i occasionally grunt. either when scrambling to reach a ball that was very hard to get, or hitting the ball as hard as i can (which is rare) or after playing for a gud bit. it is not something i think about.

the peeps at the top of their game hit the ball at hard as they can, id say many of those grunts r natural.

i guess seles took it to a new level, consistently doing it. sharapova does it consistently, which gets me excited. i never thought of it as a ploy, but apperenly wilbon does.

i wonder if he ever played the game once?

last nite i went to pussy practice and it was 48 degrees. maybe u guys r right! i was the only one there. i was pretty disgusted.

geesh, we used to play when it 1 out, in philly. talk about kicking a bowling ball!!!!!

so it looks like we about 130 handles down since jimmy and revy got very bullish. 370 to go. around there they will freak and go bearish, putting the floor in.

Bunkerman said...

Hmmm ... GDP still positive after fist revisions. Guess "recession" did not begin in Q4.

mern said...

"But now, with housing prices having gone down, credit becoming tighter and prices of necessities like food and energy going up sharply, it's created quite a squeeze on consumers' disposable income," said Maria Fiorini Ramirez, head of economic consulting firm MFR Inc.

The surge in gas prices has forced Kenny Khan to cut back his weekly 100-mile visits to his sister in Cherry Hill, N.J., to once a month.

"It costs me $50 in gas to visit her, said Khan, 52, who lives in Teaneck, N.J., and manages a gas station in midtown Manhattan. "As a salaried consumer, I can't afford that much for recreation."

Economists fear a continued slowdown in consumer spending will further weaken the economy.

The Federal Reserve's rate cuts won't lessen this inflation, said food price expert John Norris, managing director at Oakworth Capital Bank. As long as the dollar remains weak, the global demand for American exports will remain high.

"Consumers should build into their budgets continued increases," Norris said.

is that stagflation?

Two masked and machete-wielding men who barged into a club in Sydney, Australia, couldn't have picked a worse night for their robbery -- a monthly meeting of bikers

About 50 burly bikers fought back with tables and chairs -- pretty much anything that wasn't bolted down. One would-be robber was tied up; the other in the hospital.

Police arrested both

"They (the robbers) thought they had the upper advantage with their knives and their machetes," Jim Webb, night supervisor of the club, told CNN. "They didn't expect to run into a bunch of guys carrying chairs and tables."

One of the would-be robbers crashed through a plate-glass door and jumped off a balcony.

"All he had to do was push the button and it automatically opened," Webb quipped.

The second man made a break for it through the club's service entrance, but the bikers tackled him near a neighbor's fence.

"We just grabbed him, crash-tackled him to the ground, hogtied him with electrical wire and left him for the cops," Vancornewal said.

Police confirmed in a statement that club patrons subdued the second man until officers arrived, but did not provide additional details. The suspect turned out to be a 16-year-old boy.

is this a soft landing?

mfl59 said...

Bunkerman does the US dollar's decline bother you at all sir?

Bunkerman said...

The dollar doesn't bother me at all. It has to come to a level eventually that clears the curretn accont deficit. But that can be a long time.

So far, the landing is soft ... still might be a touch & go.

Bunkerman said...

btw, for the Krypto Fund the sum of my foreign stock postions plus my gold & silver exceeds my US stocks (ex REITs)

Bunkerman said...

I just don't see the screeching about the dollar at all. That's really the problem of all those countries of the world that like the US to buy their goods and then not spend their money here. They lose money, not us. Screw'em.

Bunkerman said...

those countries have been parasites on the US for decades, using exports to the US to prop up their economies. They need to adjust and have more consumer-driven economies.

Frosty said...

Dr evil...why make billions when you can make millions.

mern said...

the $ going down is the only thing holding up the tape and earnings, imo.

at the same time, i think the $'s weakness is why t boone mite have to cover his short without taking any sugar.

at 100 bucks a barrel the saudi r basically making the same vig they did 60. the $ was about 1.10 then, now got the 74 handle. so 100 dont like that high to them, imo.

mern said...

bush must have washed down some little blues this am to take the edge off his morning 8 ball.

Bunkerman said...

The Arabs are a prime reason for a drop in the dollar. Most of their money is spent in Europe. Russia, too.

If they want the dollar to stop going down, they need to spend money on American goods & services. Or invest more here.

Otherwise, screw 'em.

mern said...

i just checked with the tax collector. last yr they assessed my home at 339. this yr is looking like 278.

if i cud dump this place for 225 it wud be a miracle.

not that i care. i love where i live and dont care to move until i get well into my 60's. if i make it that long, id probably move back to philly suburbs. my soccer playing will be behind, and my working days. i miss the changing seasons and by then i shud be able to buy wallingford for about 300k.

It may be sound unbelievable, but conservative Rush Limbaugh is urging Republicans to cross party lines this Tuesday in primaries in Ohio and Texas and vote for Hillary Clinton.

During his No. 1 rated radio show and on his Web site, www.rushlimbaugh.com, the former Clinton archenemy has told listeners to “pimp themselves” for just one day vote by voting for Hillary to keep the Democratic Party “at war with itself.”

Citing a story in a Texas newspaper headlined “Many Republicans to Vote for Obama," Limbaugh told listeners this week: “I understand I've got a big challenge here to try to get Republicans to change their minds on this and vote for Hillary to keep her in the race, to keep that party at war with itself . . .

“It's clear that Republicans in Texas have been listening to this program where we have advised Republicans to pimp themselves for a day and go vote in the Democrat primary . . . I just think, at this stage, the longer Hillary can stay in this, the better for us.”

Brian: They had a meeting about it last night.
Peter: Why wasn't I told?
Brian: They sent you a card, but it said "for Peter" on it so you must of thought it was from you, so you didn't...you know, its just easier to call you stupid.

200 KFT.

i handed over 500k to my old manager at shields. he trades munis only.

i gave him full discretion. he is leaning on the short end becuase he believes the fed will have to hike rates by the end of the yr.

ive let him manage money before, but i pulled it from him when i bought the dog shop and paid for the house in full.

HE IS VERY GUD! probably as smart as u and bman, but on the muni side. he think 5% a yr tax free is very doable.

so the worden makes 60 + my 80+ 25 (tax free) + 13k (from the dog shop for another 3 yrs)

so we make about 170 and our bills r about 40, a yr.

sadly i am in the distinct miniority of my generation.

i guess we can take the extra 110 k a (after tax) and flip 90 treasuries until we have a kid or 2.

u ok with that?

mern said...

interesting comment late last nite.

i think a lot of people, especially my age, just have a cell phone and no land line anymore. at least my friends and family.

the last time i rode the bus was in 94 when my car was recalled for a defective engine. i took the bus for a week to get to work and back.

holy grap, u want talk about the lower class. people that ride the bus, smell, look disgusting, and r just broken down from head to toe.

not a gud sign if u have to ride the bus in tampa

mern said...

dont worry frosty. after friday, u wont really see me in here much.

ill be in philly/pittson next week.

then i start 3/10, and will vanish like a virgin on prom nite.

still smoke free here. gonna hang at BSC for a bit, and make sure that is the only pee test i take, unless i pass out at work with a bottle of valuim spilled all over my desk. im pretty sure that is the case, but better to be safe than sorry.

I CANT WAIT TO BECOME A POT HEAD AGAIN!

That bank failure comment just means that small banks that were aggressie and can't raise capital will have trouble. No surprise. But that means more business for the big banks.

i just hope BSC doesnt do a huge round of layoffs at the end of the yr and im the first one cut in the office.
