Some News, Some Not

Yesterday was an interesting day for the markets. Much bad news and an early bear raid hit the markets to knock the S&P futures down 20 pts, but buyers stepped up and the market closed up 11 pts on higher volume. The Nazz performed similarly. A higher volume reversal up on bad news is significant. So I wonder if this is a sign of a change in psychology ? That up day on the recent AIG bad news showed the same. Are real buyers stepping up, or are there no more real sellers lower, to cause short raiders to cover ? The former seems more probable based on the positive close.

Energy and miners were strong again. Dip buying proves itself again.

The Star Wars anti-missile program proves itself against a real target. Scores of liberal physicists of the 1980s were proven wrong in their pronouncements of impossibility; Ronald Reagan proven correct.

A WSJ op-ed brought up the "pushing on a string' fear. This occurence was predicted here weeks ago.

The stagflation fear is now rampant. Uh ... what happened to the recession ? Does no one realize that "stagnation" does not equal recession ?

Hillary wildly attacking Obama as "inexperienced". Objectively, he has more experience that her. But what's new about a Clinton lying ?

The left smears McCain with an old rumor about an affair. Hmmm .... I thought that didn't matter anymore ? Nothing new about leftist double standards or smearing.

Gold is at a new record; silver approaches $18; copper is at $3.76; oil is over $100. Uh ... does anyone not see that this world economic strength is incompatible with recession ?

The recent smashing and now ripping up of energy and miners proves that patient dip buying of good groups works. If you did that and are an investor, pat yourself on the back and enjoy and wait for the LT gains. If you're a trader, remember part two - "sell rips".

Phooey ! The Vista computer just crashed again - this post is from the autosaved draft. I hate this computer. Crashing with a mostly bare bones systems stinks. Total BS. I'm thinking of just junking it and buying a new Mac for my main computer. And now I have to call Dell support today - that should be fun.

Word of the Day
"Exanimate" - adj [$10]
Exanimate means 1. lacking animation; 2. lifeless or appearing lifeless.
Sentence: Until yesterday, exanimate stock markets made Bunkerman wonder why he spends time daily watching them.

Boone on babblevision.

Says oil will stabilize, maybe drop $10 in the summer, then back over $100 in the fall.

That means net "zero" inflation push from oil for 2008.

Uh ... Boone agrees with Bunkerman ... or is that the converse ;-)))

Spin-em said...

T Boone would prefer giving it to US farmers rather than Ahab...We're sepulturing ourselves by sending the $$$ out of the country

Bunkerman said...

true, spin.

nuclear works: build the plants and use the power to create hydrogen from water.

I don't think there is enough nat gas for it all.

No single bullet will do it - a multiplicity of efforts each producing 10% would work.

I don't thikn this "cellulosic" ethanol will ever work. They don't have the land or the process.

Bunkerman said...

Actually I think the left really wants to block every single solution so they force the world back to a horse-driven economy with manure as a fertilizer. That's their "natural" solution - man is evil.

Bunkerman said...

oil use per person means nothing. US is actually producing more GDP per barrel used than other nations.

Bunkerman said...

I think the US trade deficit is getting fairly close to net zero after oil is taken out.

Mrs. B buys the TIAA real estate fund that actually buys the buildings.

Bunkerman said...

that's a general comment, Abud.

Some stocks like DVN, PCU, etc are not cheap. Same for most energies and miners. Not a buyer here of those.

big banks, GOOG, AAPL, GE are cheap.

Bud said...

GOOG won't be cheap at 350

mern said...

so if we stay around say 2% GDP growth for the yr or longer and the CPI stays at near 5% for the rest of decade, is that stagflation?

mern said...

u agree with buffet that KFT is gud to be long?

Bunkerman said...

gonna be tough getting CPI or PCE to 5% for all 2008 if oil stays flat as Boone says.

Bunkerman said...

Mrs. B owns KFT for LT.

i cant stop watching this. i watch it at least once a day

Bunkerman said...

Yeah, I'd say real GDP at 2% and CPI at 5% would be "mild" stagflation. I'd prefer a definition with the PCE or even the GDP implicit deflator as a consistent measure of inflation.

Note the the GDP numbers we all see are "real", after inflation is subtracted out using the implied GDP deflator.

I'm not sure what the numbers were in the late 1970s - I'm sure inflation was over 5% then, though.

Spin-em said...

ya if memory serves because i was 5-9 at the time.

uh oh .. I see silver over $18. gotta get the metal case to the bank to get some to sell - 500 oz. at a pop = five 100 oz. bars. Can't carry that in my pocket adn a bullion bag is a bit open ;-)

With the ground so frozen, it's a good think I dug up all my gold & silver to put in the bank last summer.

Hmmm ... buying at $4-5, selling at $18 - not bad for a paranoid recluse.

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Ryan Howard won his salary arbitration case against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday when he was award $10 million, the highest figure awarded a victorious player.

they shudnt have even let it come to this, he is worth far more than 10 mil. i hope they ink him to a longer term deal.

and i hope the iggles surprise me and sign chad johnson and a couple others.

they almost beat the pats, and were the first team to come close. everyone used thier game plan including da giants to beat em. the eagles also played the gmen very tuff at the end of the yr, and they beat the cowgirls. they r close. if lurie cud just break out his wallet, and andy can stay focused on football, rather than his 2 drug addicts bible thumping kids, it shud be the eagles turn to get the lombardi trophy.

donny looking like an mvp, again, if they just get him a deep threat. and possibly a decent fullback.

both lines look strong. linebacker core cud use a tweak. and the secondary needs help becuase dawkins best days r behind him.

I think no golfer could do that - ugh ... golf shirts. Do your have a little alligator on them, Abud ;-)

put 200 KFT into the IRA.

3.5% yield aint bad.

while there food is bad for u, the rest of world wants to eat oreos and mac n cheese.

and so does 80% of this country which is overweight. i think the other 20% have eating disorders.

anyone in ethopia have acid reflux disease? i love that commercial. fat white guy frying food, happy he can still eat crap becuase he pops a pill every morning. here is an original thought, stop eating crap, u wont need the pill.

Bunkerman said...

Bunkerman said...

let 1/2 my PCU go. I had to hold too much of that one as I didn't have LT gains in October. So it's close enough adn I have too much copper play. 125% gain.

Bunkerman said...

PCU has a 15x PE now. Since RTP is getting a bid at around 20x, I'm keeping 1/2 to get a bid and my 30% return for this year from this level. I figure some China company buys them.

Frosty said...

KFT heck of a long term investment...it is up nearly 7% since the MO spin a little more than five years ago...the tea leafs look like the 25 handle next six months where vaule players, real buyers, would come in with a 5 yeild.

Frosty said...

Bud...sent you some mail, sorry it was electronic...no motionlotion included...spanky, you little rascal...this hero worship stuff is kinda' cool, I know how Big John feels today.

Bunkerman said...

KFT management can be motivated now. Being a bit part of MO killed any drive.

It's in Mrs. B's Sky Fund - she likes stable, slow growers.

Frosty said...

"she likes slow growers"...to much detail sir ;)

mern said...

i figure if buffet bought 130 million in shares around these levels, probably not a bad idea for the IRA

Bunkerman said...

sheesh ... a little late for golds.
