Monday Morning Rambles

iPhone appears to be a sales success. Now it's gotta perform well.

One of my computers has the blue screen of death - nice homecoming surprise :-(( At least the on-site service contract has a month to go. That's the second Dell computer I have that seems to have some kind of hard disc problem. I wonder if they downgraded the quality of their hard drives a few years ago.

Uh, the world did NOT end over the weekend. Bears were wrong again ;-)

My home town definitely has the best pizza in the country. I had to go to another shop one evening. So I went to an old favorite shop from my high school days. Excellent. Pepperoni, onion, green peppers, black olive and mushrooms. :-))

I have to do some self-analysis this week about some trades - corn and natural gas. I've been really distracted the last few weeks and maybe missed something. Certainly the charts say so. I'm still long those, but gave up my profits and an very red now on those.

Stock futures are up solidly, perhaps due to new quarter money. The bears will hit the pop. Let's see if they have more ammo. The S&P cash chart shows a clear rectangular consolidation pattern. I suspect really buyers are putting money to work at the S&P cash 50 DMA.

Gee, some jerk suggesting we should let China has preferential treatment and sell harmful goods here. Are these guys just stupid?

Golly, WSJ says a prime Manhattan office building is going for $1,589 per sqare foot. That's a big price! I remember when $500 per square foot was considered a huge price. The article says the buyers are Europeans who see NYC as cheap vs. London, etc.

PS: Did anyone notice that oil hit $71 today? Demand is so strong. Prices have to rise to ration supply. The falling dollar makes oil cheaper in the rest of the world. $70 was a resistance on the weekly chart.

Oh no!!...The blue screen of death. Last time I had that ...the computer couldn't really recover. Had to buy a new one.

Bud said...

The biggest problem for this market right now....is that I'm getting bullish. Going thru the charts over the weekend....definitley saw quite a number of stocks I want to buy.

I read with dismay over the weekend that the senate blocked repeal of the Tiarht amendment. A big victory for rogue gun dealers and the NRA. A defeat for peace loving law abiding persons like me. Disgusting and disgraceful.

Bunkerman said...

Thanks Bud for that news that the freedom loving people defeated the oppressive power-mongers [aka anti-gun factions].

That will keep rich & powerful people like Bloomberg from suing honest gun dealers. And will protect the privacy of law abiding gun owners. A victory for freedom - very fitting for this week. :-))

Why don't we just disarm ( and almost disband) law enforcemnet and give everybody a firearm? Seems like that would be cheaper.

Bud said...

Lmaoooooooooooo...........nice picture spin

Bunkerman said...

roflmao Spin. good one. :-)

mern said...

LOL spin. boy u looked shitty on saturday. i cant believe they brought u up, just after getting off the DL, and only playing double a ball.

i didnt know u were 6 ft 6?

OMG is the phillies season over. cant blame manuel, absolutely no pitching staff. and no bait to land a gud starter unless they wanna give up Rowland.

opps maybe someone will want burrel? he makes about 300k a hit. 13,500,000 and batting 200.

officially voted the biggest bust in phillies his. lance parish 2nd, then freddy garcia.

bud guns r like drugs. if they become illegal, gud people wont be able to defend our homes, if intruded. but trust me, the bad guys wud still be able to get them, and probably easier than now.

im getting more excited for the paris trip by the day, NOT! i mite as well paint an american flag on my bald head and make fun of the muslims in paris.

mern said...

id say the gap up favors the bears

Bunkerman said...

I figure the poparoo is index funds positioning new money. Although they probably want to buy the close, street firms might be averaging them in to protect buy on close orders.

We'll see if new sellers come in.

mern said...

u think the natty gas is down becuase there hasnt been a hint of activity in the gulf since late may?

still really early in the hurricane season

Bunkerman said...

No, I think it's due to the lack of really hot weather on the major coastal cities.

Bunkerman said...

Good ISM number for mfg. So much stock is sold short and there are so many bears. I wonder how many months the subprime weakness can be their main theme? That one started in late February and that's over four monhts ago.

Buyers are stepping up in foreclosures and I get the impression lenders are trying to workout the problems.

As I posted in a comment last week, the losses in a mortgage are a lot less than in a corporate default for subordinated debt. So the subordinated piecves in the CDO get hurt, but the senior paper - the bulk of it - comes out OK except in a very severe recession like in 1973.

That's the mathematics of (properly) structured finance.

Frosty said...

bunkerman....not all implement FASB 125 in the same manner and there is no pat formula for reconizing gians...at a mimimum it is not like anyone is marking to market on a daily basis. do you agree?

Bud said...

The 'real buyers' makin a fake virtual phony like me real happy today.

Bud said...

Phillies looked horrendous this weekend.

Bud said...

Fire Charlie manueal and hire mike hargrove.

Bunkerman said...

Closed my nat gas. I don't see much hope for serious heat on the coasts. I missed that a few weeks ago. I remember thinking the models didn't have that, and pondered it a little. That was really stupid not to listen to that "little birdie" Darn. FUBAR trade. I put it onto the distractions & overconfidence.

Frosty said...

the spinny HOKU play for this week holding support....that spinny has sweat touch for a big man, very ODEN like...lol

Bunkerman said...

Yes, Frosty. Many don't or can't maek to market every day. BUT I think they have to mark to market on EOQ. Hence last week's weakness as losses were recognized.

Some long-term positions are just marked to market on books this week for accounting, but those are true private placements.

Bunkerman said...

Closed my corn, too. I don't see a serious threat to pollination in the weather now. And some research said the additional acres are in high yeld states. So although I saw a lot of scrawney corn, I think I got a misleading impression. Again a FUBAR trade. I really screwed that up, not taking a nice profit on a stop around 410. I need a break. Too much overconfidence from prior successes.

Keeping the calls as they aren't worth much anyway.

mern said...

Odalis Perez was scratched. Charlie

Manuel responded with a "veteran.'' Double A dandy Kyle Kendrick was 2-0 in three previous starts, and had been more than adequate in each. Yesterday, Double-K was Special-K.

Freddy Garcia has been green-lighted to begin soft-tossing today, 2 weeks into his most excellent Clearwater visit. And isn't

soft-tossing what the $10 million righthander with the labrum

"pathology'' and "fraying'' of the rotator cuff was doing all along? Garcia could return some time

after the All-Star break. Which All-Star break is not clear.

J.A. Happ, Saturday's emergency starter, has been mercifully

returned to Triple A Ottawa to resume his pitching education. And somebody named Anderson Garcia - or is it Garcia Anderson? - has been added to the weary south end of the bullpen.

It is unclear when Brett Myers will make his next Comcast

appearance - the one where he is showing pitching coach Rich Dubee where the right arm hurts. Then they walk to the clubhouse. It appears the accidental closer is more month-to-month than week-to-week, although the manager still points into the haze of a post All-Star return for Brett.

Finally, Tom Gordon is

expected to make an actual

rehab appearance this week in Clearwater. Flash, disabled since May 4 (retroactive to May 2), is approaching the 2-month mark in one of baseball history's slowest-healing rotator cuff "strains.''

In case you're just dying to see all these lame-armed pitchers back in the fray - pun intended - be careful what you wish for

bill conlin in the philly inquirer. LMAO!

Frosty said...

hang in there bunkerman....grease your bearings, fiddle with the big tool and put some full metal jacket loads in the air....what ever it takes to tighten' up your play...me, I just kill something, puts everything back in perspective.

Bunkerman said...

out of wheat & cocoa, too. I like both but need a clean slate to find some good trends to climb onto.

Bunkerman said...

So I'm up 25% in commodites YTD versus my high of 42% a few weeks ago. No commodity postions any more except the worthless corn calls. Phooey FUBAR :-(((

Bud said...

Does killing something make you feel more like a man Frosty? You really are sickening.

Bud said...

Frsoty why don't you just buy yourself a german sports car instead ( enviro friendly of course) ....to overcome your 'inadequacy' issues.

Bud said...

POT is a monster.

Bunkerman said...

Another reason I capitulated on the corn and nat gas was Friday's COT reports.

The beefers wre covering somewhat in last week's nat gas selloff. A bad sign.

And for corn, the beefer short position was still large. And I figure the farmers who planted those extra acres are going to be quick to lock in profits if they haven't already.

Definitely a cluster FUBAR. :-(((

Frosty said...

uh Bud, I'm merely putting healthy, low fat, organic food on the table....it's not like I'm doing stem cell research.

Spin-em said...

mern, or anybody...say youre the Boss..think like the Boss...hot head....Torre has to go.....do you want another show no emotion guy like Torre again?...Who is your next manager?

mern said...

mike schmidt

mern said...

yankees will hire Bowa for about a minute. ;-)

Bud said...

I hope the yankees give torre an extension......and also especially roger clemens. Torre is an average manager that was handed the keys to a ferrari. Frosty the drunk cud have managed the late 90s yankees to world titles.

die yankees die!!!!!!!

mern said...

the yankees starting staff is about as bad as philly. can u really blame the managers? i think the GM's, who signed these senoir citizens r more at fault.

also how can u have no talent at the triple A level?

manuel reminds me of a neutered manatee, but i dont think he is as bad as bowa. phils fired francona, who is now considered the best manager in the league. OF COURSE, d'oh :-(

Bunkerman said...

Bunkerman said...

We watched Dr. Strangelove again a couple weeks ago. Super movie.

I was going to blog about it, but I figured I might be perceived as a nut. ;-)

I love the scene where Buck Turgidson [aka George C. Scott] imitates a B-52.

The nuclear bomb bursts at the end are really cool. They are real, by the way. I have a few tapes of nuclear bomb tests. For nuclear survival thinking, they are essential.

Bunkerman said...

Yes, Walk the Line was excellent. I remember some of that actually happening from when I was young.

mern said...

agree the departed was gud.
