So What's Different?

OK, maybe I'm an old fart. I lived through the horrible 1973-4 recession, the 1979-1981 inflation and recession, bank failures in the early 1980s, major frauds, the mid 1980s rust belt destruction, the 1987 crash, the 1990-3 real estate smashing, and the 2001-2003 tech smashing.

Recent events are a ... yawn.

All we hear are screeches about "SUBPRIME !!!!!!!!!!" We hear screeches about the rating agencies now downgrading some MBS. Since when aren't the rating agencies slow and cautious? They aren't traders. But they do a fine job and express an educated opinion on thousands of securities. More blame game. Is that an American chronic mental illness?

If you've ever owned a home over ten years, you know that home prices can drop or flatten for years. Nothing new.

I listened carefully to Bernanke yesterday talk about inflation expectations being so important. Here's my take: home prices flattening are a kick in the gut to inflation expectations. In the 1970s and early 1980s real inflation, home prices went up and up and up. So for consumers with memories, seeing home prices stabilize or go down will reduce their inflation expectations. The Fed has that powerful factor going for it.

I expect a Fed rate cut this fall to ratify the yield curve unless core PCE or CPI ramps. I don't expect that, particularly since oil prices are about the same or lower than at this time last year.

It's a bull market. Buy dips. Use time diversification. The trend is your friend.

PS: I just heard the Republican deputy whip in the House talk about the taxes on carried interest. He's either stupid or intentionally obfuscating the issue to protect big contributors. If the Republicans block this, I'll have to leave that party - the party of Teddy Roosevelt. Sickening.

PPS: Bubblevision is doing a disservice to viewers as they constantly frame the taxation of carried interest as raising taxes on private equity. That's just a flat lie or false statement. The investors who take the risk to their capital get the capital gains treatment. I just head Grassley state the tax raise is for the managers who are getting a low tax rate on compensation - lower than every other person.

Wow you really are old. It's a bull market. But when I see the charts of BSC and LEH that makes me think the market comes in for a few weeks. $BKX looks hideous.

CHAP...Bub the stud...I may have to vote for the hildog now.

Bunkerman said...

Sheesh. What is this "war on wealth" crap? I haven't heard proposals about raising taxes on theh actual investors who take the risk -just on the managers who get low cap gains on their compensation.

What a bunch of lies!

Bunkerman said...

I just looked at charts for $ Euro and $ yen. They are opposites. The dollar is strong vs. the yen. But weak vs. the Euro. Euro/yen is very strong. So there's a LOT going on beyond the dollar.

I think we should not be so dollar-centric in looking at "causes", else a serious error can be made.

Bud said...

'Party of ted roosevelt'....lmaoooooooo. GOP hasn't been that for decades. Current GOP is a war mongering spreading fear party full of racist bigot demagogues. Sickening.

Bud said...

Warning: Shorting FONR can be extremely hazardous to your health.

Frosty said...

Which of today's politicians are in Teddy's Bull Moose party?

Bunkerman said...

I suppose the few conservative Democrats that exist would be. Some Republicans are, I think. Not too many left, unfortunately. Most politicians are in the pockets of ... you know who. :-(

I see COP is getting respect now. That was a recent breakout from a long consolidation base - see its weekly chart.

The PE is still only 8 vs. 11-13 for other oil majors. Maybe pulling out of Venezuela go tall the bad news out.

That stock should be over $100 easily.

There must be billions shorted on this subprime endless screeching. I wonder where?

Quint said...

LOL, oops sorry guys. I guess I need to switch blogs before I post. Was reading up good to see you all.

Bunkerman said...

I'd bet that NYSE and Nazz short interest hit another new record this month. Any takers?

A "gedanken" [aka "thought"] bet.

Bud said...

I really like that RSH chart.

Bud said...

Nuthin to be sorry about Q-man. Do you miss Rev?

Quint said...

Bud, Going back out on my own is a scary but exhilarating thing. No regrets here.

Bunkerman said...

I think my Harry James & Artie Shaw and many others beat this Grateful Dead stuff by a mile.

Maybe not live, but those were pretty hot bands in the late 1930s and 1940s.

I think my music proof stands. This is no counterexample.

Bunkerman said...

Good luck, Quint. I wish you the best.

maverick said...

Q... did you keep clients from KY days?

Bunkerman said...

Too bad I bailed on Si's solar plays back around April 15. Those were great stocks. But I was very long & had to pull $$$ out to pay huge taxes. Oh well.

Quint said...

Bunkerman, Thank you.

Maverick, Yes a loyal and solid base to rebuild from.

Frosty said...

Qdaddy...congrats, good to see ya....stop in again when you can stay awhile.

mfl59 said...

Best of luck Quint...

Bud said...

B'man you are absolutely right on how cnbc is reporting this taxation argument. But 90% of their viewers are republicans and they cater to them. Should managers of other peoples monies also pay just capital gains? That seems unfair. When I was a broker I paid ordinary income tax on my earnings. Why didn't I get to pay just capital gains?

Bunkerman said...

lolol, Bud, you weren't a billionaire so didn't have lobbyists to protect you & high priced tax lawyers to structure you a loophole.

Frosty said...

barney frank with a new pair of designer specs....I thought he had taken off his blinders for this spot on CNBC.....until he opened his mouth....I need at tums.

Bunkerman said...

OK, I saw that movie, Office Space, after you guys recommended it. It was really funny. I guess I just didn't memorize it ;-)

Bunkerman said...

So no takers on my short interest bet? Wimps. Or was I betting a sure thing?

Hard for technical corretion with so much stock short. Real news needed.

I think this year will be the death knell of the short infatuation. Too much underperformance in those funds.

Bunkerman said...

At least Erin & Cramer are framing the issue corrrectly.

Bud said...

FONR actin well. Lmaooooooooooooo

Bud said...

Yes they are B'man.

Bud said...

Roflmao......it's for the fireman and teachers.

die GOP die !!!!

Bunkerman said...

GOP is doomed next year if they fight this tax on the carried interest.

Bunkerman said...

lolol they're probably doomed anyway.

Bud said...

Gimme a break Frosty. At least Barney is not a child molester like Foley or Hastert.

Bunkerman said...

they should go populist & embrace it.

Bud said...

There is a ZERO percent chance that the current GOP ever goes populist.

Frosty said...

uh Bud, you should have been a defense attorney....barney dosen't bang little boys the best you have...LMAOOOOOO

Bud said...

I'm actullay surprised you didn't support Gore when he makin his 'people versus the powerful' argument.

Bud said...

True Frosty. That was lame. I had a long nite. I work on my material for tomorrow. Lololol

Bud said...

Mern's bong must be missing him today. Lmaooooooooo

maverick said...

beefers moving this market around today...that felt good :)

Bunkerman said...

Al Gore wants to enserf everyone in the world and make them drink his creationist Kool-Aid. Everyone will forced to farm a little plot of land for his bureaucrats and fertilize it with their own [bleep]. And ride a state-owne dbicucle to worship in his temples. He's a proto-fascist.

Bunkerman said...

Sheesh Bud. Al Gore IS the powerful. He was born into a senatorial family and lives on a manor. He's a typical patriarch wanting to prevent the common man from improving his life.

Bud said...

He is B'man. That's why laughed when he made those 'people vs powerful' speeches.

Spin-em said...
