Price Warp

Driving here to SE Ohio, I must have passed thru some strange time-space warp, as prices for quarterpounder cheeseburgers, etc. fell by around $1 somewhere along the route. Strange how "inflation" mostly disappears once I get out of the areas of megopolis. I suppose people living in the sun & surf areas notice the same thing when they get away from the influence of the "good and beautiful" as the ancient Greeks called their aristocratic class.

And I of course turned on Babblevision this morning, being a bit of a market addict. What did I hear ? One boob contradicting himself in the same sentence. He was griping about "inflation" in one breath and in the next breath said companies were having trouble raising prices ! Hellooooo ... if a company has trouble raising prices, there is NO general inflation. In inflation, raising prices is easy.

There are rising prices of some raw materials due to demand in China, etc. and limited new supply. Period. No general inflation. That guy and most of the financial pundits need to go to re-education camps to learn the meaning of a few words and concepts.

Corn fields are really poor here ... worst I can every remember seeing. Corn is only about 6-9 inches high vs. two feet nomally by this time of year.

Word of the Day (surprise !)

"Monolatry" - noun [$? no dictionary - I heard this word on a CD course]
Monolatry means a doctrine or practrice to worship of one god, but does exclude the existence of others. This appears to be the practice of the early Old Testament until the time of the exile to Babylon, when monotheism became the doctrine.
Sentence: Wall Street traders seem to believe in an itinerant monolatry, viz. worship of whatever works while it does, but I guess that reduces to worship of the money. Bunkerman remembers hearing joking statements to this effect while working on Wall Street.

There's inflation everywhere.....In the real world..not the paper pusher bubble world...suppliers have raised prices 2/3 times....gas,water,electric,parts,paper..ect.fine...auto prices are down cuz they dont want to buy a $4 gas guzzler..Is that a victory? Bunk needs proof...."statistics dont lie"....If a hammer is coming right at your thumb....Do you need proof its going to hurt like a mf?..loool

GS BEATS EARNINGS ESTIMATES!!!!!

WHAT A SHOCKER!!!

beefer gutting other beefers indeed....

Spin-em said...

The idea the MCD has cut their quarterpounder price has more to do with gaining market share and killing the lil weaker guys. Down the road, when the common men have less choices for lunch...they can raise prices that stick.....

sorry..Im a lil bitter this morning..looool

fine article in WSJ today bunkerman about the decline in returns from the beefer community...

yes, gold mist drives the highways well - 24 mpg at 73mph cruise control

Bunkerman said...

i didn't mean a price cut, I meant they were $1 cheaper here vs at home.

Meredith Whitney is striving to move from one of an analyst polytheism to monolatry status.

well i dont live near a big city. i live about 40 miles from the beach right in between tampa and orlando, IE crackerville.

after watching the phillies crunch the red sox last nite, i forgot to eat. so i weighed in at 148 today.

so i treated myself to wendys for breakfast. medium fries and a double cheeseburger. god dang that was good, havent had red meat in months.

price on the board was 5.77. i get to the window she charged me 6.72. i looked at the bill. it was 6.24 not 5.77. i asked it the price was right. she said yes, but prices have gone up so fast that cant change the prices on the menu fast enuff.

or u can look at cnn and watch the piece where many many people r riding bikes, NAKED, in protest of inflation.

r they being arrested? NOPE
r people outraged? NOPE

they r lining up in the streets and getting appluases, by the hundreds.

watched cnbc at 830 this am. santelli made me chuckle as usual. "wow PPI up 7% yoy and you know thats a low ball, and it is really higher."

hank steinbrenner makes the snipe list with possible the most ignorant comment i have ever heard muttered in baseball.

paying someone millions to be an athlete to play baseball, sorta, kinda implies, well u shud be able to run 90 feet, without getting hurt. then he quotes some rule from the 1800's.

hank it is the AL who shud dump the DH rule. being a manager in the NL is much tougher than in the AL becuase of the no DH rule. and there was this guy who pitched for the red sox who won 20 games a season until he started hitting 50 homers a yr. hank is going to ruin that club. they wont win a ring until he shuts up, which is never.

I wonder what total compensation is at GS as % if profits ?

A hedgie gets 20%; I'd guess GSW pays out 50%. No sale.

New HQ, six new trading floors .. a bad sign.

Dimon is notorious for cost-cutting; last year when the subprime meltdown began, analysts in one of JPMorgan's buildings say, they received a memo stating that milk would no longer be available at coffee pantries. After an uproar, the firm began serving milk again. During the call, Dimon said "wasting money is a sin," and then quipped that "It is not true that I ordered smaller hamburgers for the café, but if I [had] thought about it, I would have done it."

Later, Dimon was asked by an employee if he could have "access to the Bear cafeteria, because they serve bigger hamburgers there." Dimon did not answer the question.

LOL!

i cud be wrong but i dont think that merle haggard classic hasnt been played live since 1973. i love that tune and i would love to listen to the transition from that into "till the morning comes"

"lorene" YOWZA

at 68 phil is knocking the cover off the ball.

bobby continues to mellow with age, as does his band. some like that. i sorta like it, they are getting very jazzy with long extended jazz jams.

BUT if u still want to shake your bones and feel like a hood oranament on a freight train, phil is da man to be following. seriously he must be on HGH to be playing 3 hour and 30 minutes shows and they r non stop ROCK and ROLL. a blistering pace that molo and lesh start and the rest just follow the lead.

john molo the best drummer u never heard of!

what is the catalyst to take us back up?

oil blowing up? but that aint gonna happen. i never heard so many know it all's call this a bubble. most embraced the tech bubble as it was different this time and the same thing about housing. people like cody willard have been saying oil is in a bubble since 50
