TGIF

Golly, this week has been boring.

Even yesterday's ramp up was dull. Maybe that's because my big banks are still mired in the mud. Ugh.

BAC purchase of CFC was approved.

Trichet of the ECB talks of raising rates. I wonder how that's going to control the price of oil ? How many more unemployed German and French and Italian workers must be added to cut oil price growth ? Seems like a tough question for an economist/banker. There being no direct connection makes it really an ill-posed question. Are they fighting the old war of the 1970s ? Or just using the wrong theory/model and will cause lots of pain as they find that out.

The Ruling Class tinkers and the common man suffers.

Economic data still show no recession has or will occur in this mid-cycle slowdown.

But being right doesn't mean I am making money. Krypto Fund is outperforming considerably and is "slightly" green YTD (+2.6%), and that's most of my investments (85% now). But being competitive, the Alpha Fund is vexing me.

Word of the Day

"Lief" - adverb [$10] archaic, used in Shakespeare, etc.
Lief means gladly, willingly (usually as "had lief", or "would lief").
Sentence: Remember the old Popeye cartoons with the character, Wimpy ? Here's Wimpy as a Shakespearean character. "Perforce, I would lief pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today".

Babblevision says no slowdown in people buying lottery tickets. Uh ... that is really stupid behavior.

Lotteries are a complete rip-off of the common man. Worst pay-offs of all gambling experiences.

Bunkerman said...

The only way to have a better "expected return" is to wait until a really big pool exists filled with prior losers' money ... and play tickets with numbers mostly over 31.

Since many people play birthdays, those numbers are concentrated 31 and under. So those winners tend to have shared winners, hence lower payoffs. Winners with numbers mostly over 31 are more likely single winners with bigger pay-offs.

So if you play the lottery, at least get some math in your favor.

Bud said...

lotteries are a disgrace

it's ok for the private sector to be in that business.......like vegas

i would guess the vast majority of tickets are bought by the people that can't afford them......but no excuse......they have to take personal responsibility for their actions

but for the government and state to back them....the state is acting like a sleazy drug dealer.....'we use the money for schools and roads"

give me a f'ng break!!!!!!

Bunkerman said...

very true Bud. The states get the lottery money and just divert other funds from the schools.

A complete fraud. Looting the poor.

Bunkerman said...

OK jobs number, small loss.

Big jump in unemployment rate as many enter work force.

so only people who are rich are hard workers? youve got a lot to learn son....Hilary would smack you if she heard that

Bunkerman said...

One of the problem with the D's is they want to take from high income people working hard, and not lazy municipal bondholders sipping pink gins.

That is, the existing wealthy, trust fund types, etc., get a free ride. Uh ... of course that is many D backers.

Bunkerman said...

guess I was wrong interpreting y'day as real buyers.

Song of the times follows (based on the song, "The Grand Old Duke of York")

The beefer Duke of Hedgies
He had ten thousand funds
He marched them up to the market top
And marched them down again.

Bunkerman said...

antoher problem of the D's is they ignore the marginal tax rate on lower income, hard working people.

and retired people who work.

Those rates go up to about 45% including SS & Medicare.

Frosty said...

"player of the week"...lil' chin music and here comes the coco crisp bumb rush.

D's like Obama just want power to push all the people around and make them kiss his butt, like a feudal lord.

The Baron takes the crop, doles out kitchen scraps, gets butt kissed, bangs maidens, etc.

These oil moves are going to create a serious political backlash.

I wouldn't be surprised to see the commodites markets squashed somehow.

Bunkerman said...

Without even a hurricane for an excuse, there is no fig leaf to hide behind.

Pension funds are going to be banned from them, position limits hugely reduced, swaps, etc. banned.

On & on.

Too bad the beefers are spoiling their own nest.

Bunkerman said...

I've been reading the history of the Mameluk empire. When the Nile failed to rise and grain was scare, a good Sultan would order the wealthy Emirs to sell their grain at a very high, but "reasonable" price.

Otherwise a revolt was risked.

These huge swings in the price of a fundamental commodity like oil are going to cause a big political response.

Bunkerman said...

per my earlier comment, I think the jump in unemployment was caused by teenager & young adults living at home to seek jobs sooner to pay for their gasoline. The data seem to back this up.

So that jump doesn't bother me ... yet.

mfl59 said...

this action smells like a blow off top to me bunkerman....all in short USO....

mfl59 said...

I think a lot of beefers are short this move, dont you bunkerman, hence exacerbating ($10) the move higher....

Frosty said...

For revolutions, you need guns, ammo, gold & silver, cigaretes, nylons, chocolate.

Hmmm I'd better go get some cigarettes and nylons. ;-)

Frosty said...

uh Bunkerman...did we light the lamp a little early today?...sometimes ya' just have to say wtf.

Bunkerman said...

I'd expect GS to be investigated for manipulation.

A full body cavity search.

The common man hates Wall Street and he's going make them pay for this.

Just a prediction, not a proposal.

Bunkerman said...

I just don't like seeing people hurt by this nonsense.

But I suppose that's why I live in a bunker ;-))

Frosty said...

have a good weekend men.

Bunkerman said...

hmmm ... from NYMEX

1000 barrels per contract x (325000 +23x100000) open interest (two years) x $150/barrel = $393 billion.

about 1/2 to 2/3 of pension fund index fund money goes into energy. Plus the beefers.

So it's quite feasible they could "own" that market long and drive prices anywhere they want.

Oil companies probably limit the amount they sell forward. And OPEC probably doesn't sell any forward.

So those denying market is being driven up by funds, etc. are in denial ... or just lying.
