Armistice Day - Veterans Day

Today is the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I. Reading Le Monde this morning, it is quite clear that today is a much larger event in France & Britain than in the US. Numerous major public commemorations include the leaders of both nations and issues of old injustices are raised. The history of World War I in both Europe and the US has much to teach modern man. If you ever get a chance, watch the DVDs that show the history of World War I. Much good footage exists and the events are far enough in the past that true history can be seen, without the influence of politics.

In the US, one element that is missed is that many personal and political liberties were crushed as the US entered World War I. Freedom of speech and the press was massive curtailed. People were fired, jailed or deported for expressing dissent. Supreme Court decisions legitimized that oppression. So while the propaganda machine touted a war to "Make the World Safe for Democracy", at home the same machine was crushing personal freedom. This is certainly not well known.

Those old Supreme Court decisions were not overturned until the 1950s and 1960s.

Markets

The significance of the China stimulus was brushed aside. That plan was real news and a quite bullish event.

American Express to become a bank. Sighhhh ...

I guess finance will now return to the old ways. CFOs will again match liabilities with assets as the god of the markets is now obviously not always around to make money rain from the sky.

Many ship building contracts are being cancelled. So over time that will make current ships more valuable. If the shipping companies can survive current conditions, they will be worth much more ... IFF the world survives..

Actions

Doing nothing. I have money to invest, but am waiting as I practice "time diversification".

Word of the Day

"Vidette" - noun [$10] = "vedette"
Vidette means 1. a small naval launch used for scouting; 2. a mounted sentry in advance of the outposts of an army.
Sentence: Hiding in the bunkers, I wonder if investors will miss noticing the videttes of the next great bull market ?

Bman do you know who Franz Ferdinand is ??

Bud said...

no question ww1 is greatly overlooked in history......but the seeds of ww2 were planted in that war

Hitler said it shamed the great german race

Bunkerman said...

I ahve no idea of what movie Spin speaks.

Franz Ferdinand was the Archduke of the Austro-Hungarian Empire who was shot in Sarajevo, which precipitated world War I.

I visited his hunting lodge in the Czech republic.

His wife, Sophia was very badly treated by the court scum in Vienna.

US overlooks WW I in the same manner as Europe overlooks the US Civil War.

Both had great import for the entire world.

LA Times reports [GS] urged some of its big clients to place investment bets against California bonds this year despite having collected millions of dollars in fees to help the state sell some of those same bonds.

no surprise except to the idealists

mfl59 said...

are you looking for some consolidation within the shipping industry Bunkerman?

Bunkerman said...

well, if "consolidatino" means ships to scrap and orders cancelled, yes. That is happening rapidly.

If "takeovers", no.

I supose some operators who didn't lock in enough time charters might BK.

Others should be OK unless they do something stupid.

then she says she was shocked her and mccain did as well as they did, but they day of the election she was convinced she wud wake up nov 5th of the VP.

americans shud be more scared of this bible thumper than bush/cheney and bin laden combined.

i guess we know who bud is voting for in 2012.................................

palin/reid in 2012. our motto is pray the gay away, pray for a gud economy, and pray for andys kids. hell i think andy is hooked on the little blues, it wud explain a lot!

u really going, spin? the kerby center, got gud accoustics?

if u like jazz u will like the dog.

bobby isnt the coked out freak he used to be. he is kinda of a control freak, and sometimes just doesnt let his mates "go for it".

spin i dont think ive missed many iggles games since reid took over, only becuase soccer matches take precedent, but ive watched, say 85% of reids tenure.

in 2000 i wanted to marry him when he started the season off with an on side kick against the cowgirlz.

i dont know what happened, but once gruden out coached him in that first home NFC champ loss, he lost it.

over the past few yrs, the giants, skins and dallas have figured reid out, and he refuses to evolve (probably becuase he doesnt believe in evolution, since he is a stupid mormon).

donny is a great QB. yes he makes mistakes. and maybe he shud lose 10 lbs and do some more cardio, but all in all, he is not the problem.

how can u blame him on the last drive? he cud have fallen forward for that yard and reid chose the exact same play, that just didnt work.

in the immortal words of al michaels "what the hell was that?"

maybe his second best quote ever besides, "do u believe in miracles, YES!"

look at the numbers. donny is a first ballot hall of famer, and he did it with a single pro bowl wideout except for one season with TO.

i just wish eagles fans wud walk that walk, instead of just talking about boycotting the remaining home games.

lurie needs to get the message. now the phillies reversed the curse. i/we dont care as much as we did, now the monkey is gone.

stop putting money in luries pocket and maybe he will chuck fat andy and use some of the cap space.......

Bunkerman what sort of reforms do you think are coming for your friends in the hedge fund community?

Frosty said...

DRYS doubled up 10.09...that's it for me Bunky...beefers are angery today.

Bunkerman said...

What do I think will happen is quite different from what I want to happen.

I'd like to stick with whatI think and not handicap Congressmen/women, who are quite susceptible to bribes & specious arguments.

Bunkerman said...

DRYS had huge pressure - I don't & wouldn't overload it.

Bunkerman said...

who knows what the 25 million share offering is doing ?

and whether those big holders are margined ... or hedging.

mfl59 said...

okay sir...what would you like to see happen?

Frosty said...

thanks Bunky...flipped half DRYS 10.80, decent position now...over 10 will hang tough with ya.

Bunkerman said...

evisceration has a nice sound

;-)

Bunkerman said...

first, I would do nothing to hedge funds under $100 million or individual traders.

Bud said...

10.80 ?? huh???? i must have missed that........i'm in at 10.59.....never green it it today

24/7/365 douche indeed

Bunkerman said...

Over $100 million - definition appplies to aggregate of $ managed - register, report "all" positions and debt (in broad sense).

Strictest pre-borrow requirements for shorts.

No shorting of ANY stock that is negative for the day, including any effective option or derivative postions.

No computerized trading.

Enforce margin rules to no more leverage than 50% including effects of any swaps and derivatives and options.

If engaged in lending in a broad sense, must submit to Fed oversight.

Cannot write credit default swaps unless put up 100% Treasury collateral.

Some kind of limitation on currency games.

To their benefit, I'd require any investor to leave money with hedge fund a minimum of one year, preferably more.

mfl59 said...

amazing how that sort of strategy can lure people into giving him $6k....

Bunkerman said...

I guess for currency trades, they should put up at least 50% collateral in cash. These huge leveraged currency trades have to stop.

That market is for real business, not beefers games.

That's not my market anyway, so something really hard to stop them disrupting and raiding the small countries is important.

Let them trade $/euro/yen as before.

Bunkerman said...

I guess I left out requiring beefers to send hostages ...

;-))

Bunkerman said...

I'm happy no one sends me 6K ... or even $2 ... that would make writing this seem like a job ... ugh!

I wonder what will come of hedge fund regulation.....

I'm sure even a libertarian like Spin's boy Patrick would agree that some regulation is necessary....

Bunkerman said...

I checked - this blog support doesn't sem to let me do that.

just my photo in the "profile"

Bunkerman said...

there seems to be quite a bit of support in other nations ... it might be done as part of a world-wide reform.

I just bought my boy some DOW....looks like a 7% yield on that sucker...CEO "seems" honest

what say you Bunkerman?

Bunkerman said...

I like DOW and got Mom some of it. Will suggest to Mrs. B, too. She has a bit of cash to invest, before the next wave comes in.

Bunkerman said...

The CEO does seem honest.

Bunkerman said...

My plan on Alpha Fund is to just make adjustments, take advantage of big drops, and keep a reserve of buying power in case I see somethign else I really like.

Looking to re-buy some GOOG after the 30 day wash sale window passes.

Might re-buy some AAPL at some point, too.

Continue to watch shippers.

Might add a bit to FCX at 22.

Bunkerman said...

I can add capital to Alpha Fund if necessary, but it's big enough for me.
