The Heartland

Here in the hill country of southeast Ohio, the common man is celebrating the harvest with their county fair. Those are lots of fun - I might try to go. I like seeing the animals. The 4H kids do a fine job. Unharvested corn is tall and dry in the fields.

Traffic on the 750 mile drive was moderate. The double quarterpounder with cheese was superb! As was the #3 breakfast meal: bacon, egg and cheese on a biscuit, fried potatoes and black coffee. McDonald's makes good coffee.

Spikie had a grilled chicken, no mayo. She loves that sandwich.

The jobs number today will be significant. Jobs are a lagging indicator and the economy was softening for months under the Fed tight money policies. I'd like to see a moderate number - 50K would be fine - and a positive revision to last month to get it over zero.

The Feds are starting a criminal investigation of the two Bear Stearns hedge funds that cratered. No surprise to me - I can't post why, but I'm not surprised.

It's a bull market until something "real" changes.

PS: Tribe scalps Yanks !!! Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy !!!

PPS: Good jobs number and a solid positive revision to last month. Now the average is about 100K gain per month. Good news - no falloff in the economy.

P^3S: So the jobs number eliminates another part on the bears' recession case. Without weak jobs growth, the consumer won't cut back. I'd still like the Fed to cut once more to 4.5% to keep real rates neutral.

I might get sued. It's personal knowledge of past actions of a key person.

Ms. Market thinks good is good now. That's good ;-)

Bunkerman...the EU kept rates pat due to inflation concerns...why would our fed not do the same...inflation is real and they know that, without the credit market liars and cheaters bail out they would have never lowered rates in the first place...wages within the report also hot, that must make them take pause...hell, you can hear poole screaming to take back the fiffttee.

Bunkerman said...

PCE yoy core inflation is under 2%. Nfw they can take that back unless inflation ticks up.

dollar weakness over time is needed to get Americans to buy American again. That's part of the trade deficit cure.

Bunkerman said...

I still think Fed policy is slightly tight.

No one can say, let's give up x jobs to get the dollar up. nfw.

Bunkerman said...

I don't think real inflation is high except in places like CA, NYC, FL, etc.

Bunkerman said...

core inflation here in SE Ohio is zero. Maybe deflation.

Frosty said...

inflation only a problem where all the people live...that makes sense...rural ohio you can eat canned beats from the garden until spring.

Bunkerman said...

nah, inflation is where all the rich people buy up all the stuff. And well-off retired people.

Lots of people in Cleveland - not much inflation thnere.

People pay up extra for weather, etc. Prices go up and the common man worker gets driven out. That drive up wages in those places. Once the rich can't hire illegals anymore, they have to pay Americans/legal immigrants more. That's where the wage inflation is.

Frosty said...

so there is infaltion as I thought...the south of the border work force is the backbone of the farmer...in the northwest where apples etc require mass labor, the guest labor program is driving up costs...we aren't just talking about the crew that cleans your bunker and washes your tank.

Bunkerman said...

lol, they need to pay more to get legals to do the work.

Bunkerman said...

illegals have been holding down the wages of the poor for decades.

Ma Bunk always made a great cheese grits and homemade noodles.

Frosty said...

how do you like your grits, regular, creamy or al dente.

Frosty said...

Bud...you should let me have a look at those football picks...the least I can do for the LDK, that was a monster call.

Bunkerman said...

regular grits are fine. Either with butter or cheese. A truly fine homestyle breakfast is fried eggs (over medium), fried spam, cheese grits and toast with pumkpin butter.

I can work outside all day with that energy.

I see the Russell 2000 is ripping up. That's a favorite playground for the beefers. The rut ripping is a clear sign of beefer money going to work - a sign of the beefers if you track them as I doo. It looks like they are moving to a new waterhole. Time to ride along if one is flexible. I guess they figure that's how they get their numbers up for the year.

Bunkerman...no real buyers today...interesting...MLF59 tosses the gold bear raiders the bird...inflation indeed.
